Paph Topaz Magic 'Maplewood' HCC/AOS
Sometimes you have to spell things out very clearly, before the AOS judges will take a look at something that at first glance looks less than ideal.
I have been collecting plants from the Paph In-Charm Topaz x Paph Sorcerer's Stone cross (now named Topaz Magic), since In-Charm Topaz is 50% helenae. Many of these bloom on smallish plants, which should be valuable towards breeding 'teacup' type hybrids. The smallest one I have, put out a 2" flower from a 3.1/2" fan!
The best flower is on a plant that is about 9" across. Last night it was screened by an AOS 'outreach' judging panel during the Deep Cut Orchid Society meeting. All the judges commented on the fact that the petals are sort of skinny, and pointing forward (helenae traits), but they could not deny that it is a very attractive flower for this type of breeding, so in the end it received a 77 PT HCC.
I have two Topaz Magic seed pods in the lab already:
One sib cross with the smallest plant
One with a compact Paph Meditation (Winston Churchill x charlesworthii)
This year I have pollinated two plants with Paph Mystic Isle (75% niveum), and now I am on the lookout for pollen from a good mini complex to put on this one. If you have something to suggest, please send me an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.

Looks great, I love these new helenae crosses coming through.
Shows promise for those teacup complexes that are coming.
