On schedule, the yellow lady's-slippers are now blooming. Here is the typical form in Newfoundland.

Less common are forms with very twisted, dark brown petals.

And here is a full clump. I should add that these are growing at our local botanical garden (my workplace...lucky me! ) but I rescued the plants about 10 years ago in western Newfoundland when a new road was being constructed.

Hey Todd
What a wonderful clump and lucky you for being able to work there every day! That's great you rescued the plant.
I can't believe how late they are blooming there. Mine finished blooming 6 weeks ago so it is a treat to see yours in bloom.
I hope you are trying other species of cyps. Your cool conditions should be wonderful for reginae and Asian species as well!
Nice photos!

Wonderful Todd. This species looks so good in the far north compared to more southern plants. Have you ever seen plants with completely flat petals (AKA planipetalum)?

Tom, I've seen planipetalum in northern Newfoundland. I have a slide of one but have not had the opportunity to get a digital pic of one. This is the closest pic I have of a flat-petalled form. This plant was only 6" tall!

Very cool Todd, thanks! Someone really should reexamine plants of this species throughout Canada due to their great variability in form. I'm not quite convinced that these extreme north forms are just stunted specimens, especially the truly flat petaled ones (Luer's pics are the best ones I know of). Your photography is wonderful by the way.
