View Full Version : Quick question, if anyone's around - re repotting, dividing
JOHNnDC June 16th, 2005, 06:25 PM I'm in the process of repotting my Paph Maudiae 'Magnificum' and in taking it out of the pot found out that it's already 3 different plants! I'm actually wondering if it was 3 plants when I bought it a year ago. Anyway, each plant has like 2 fans on it. Together, they could still all 3 grow in the same 3 inch or so pot it was in. Should I replant them together, or separately? I don't object to them being together, so I could get a nicer multiple display, but wasn't sure if the overcrowding was bad, etc.
Thoughts? And while a few roots were bad, overall, the roots are really thick and nice.
TADD June 16th, 2005, 06:43 PM Hey John, It really is up to you. If you have the space, 3 separate plants would be nice(trade or sales purpose). If you have a pot that will hold all 3 and want a better flowering display go for all in one. Sometimes paphs will divide themselves, it is natural. I have 3 villosum plants in the same pot. They were all together at obe time, now I keep them together to conserve space. I also have 2 superbiens in the same pot.
Paphraguy June 16th, 2005, 06:58 PM Yes, I agree with Tadd also!
dustyatticstuff June 16th, 2005, 08:00 PM Could it be a compot that got really big??? What is the size of the pot??
nyorchids June 16th, 2005, 08:32 PM i would go with 3 seperate plant but thats me!
Jon in SW Ohio June 16th, 2005, 08:40 PM Personally I usually leave them in the same pot unless someone I know wants a piece, or I think they will later :poke:
I am not sure how judges would view it, since they don't like it when you take the pruners to a cattleyas rhizome to make it bloom more and grow denser...but that's another story.

JOHNnDC June 16th, 2005, 09:59 PM I feel like I"m living through an episode of "The Trouble with Tribbles." Justy what I needed, 2 more orchids that I already have! I'm gonna check my pot back-ups. I can always give one to mom, trade, etc. (though it's not like it's a high-trade-value plant, I think - though the flower was quite lovely this last time).

nyorchids June 16th, 2005, 10:36 PM nice  i will trade for one!
RickL June 16th, 2005, 10:37 PM Ive seen more of that complete separation between growths in Barbata type paphs. Suks and wardii in particular.
So they probably are all clones of each other. For the time being I'd leave them together. At least to save space.
JOHNnDC June 16th, 2005, 11:30 PM Well, too late Rick! :-) I repotted them in separate containers. The roots were quite good on 2, and the 3d was pretty good. It was just so funny, it was 3 plants, no falling apart, nothing - 3 plants. Doesn't mean it didn't divide itself, but with my other orchids, oncs etc., when they fall apart you kind of feel them fall apart. Who knows.
Anyway, let me give it a month to let it reestablish itself. Then I'm glad to trade, etc. And that pic doesn't really do it justice. It was is a beautiful flower, so someone will like it :-) Thanks for the advice all.

A little late in, but for me the Maudiae types tend to divide themselves. Some pieces have roots, some don't... I have five separate pieces of Maudiae "The Queen" right now...
Normally I put them all back into the same pot. It isn't cheating.
JOHNnDC June 17th, 2005, 11:54 AM So what is the deal with folks loving "The Queen"? I saw one at Hausermann's in bloom and couldn't really tell much difference between that one and my maudiae 'magnifium' (though theirs was taller). Am I nuts?

Maybe I'm nuts... But "The Queen" is my favorite paph. Don't know that I have seen "Magnificum" and "The Queen" side by side, to compare them. I'm sure they are similar.
Want to swap divisions?
Paphgirl June 17th, 2005, 12:00 PM Supposedly one of the very best maudiaes out there. I wouldn't mind one someday, just because I am the grex whore that I am....sigh...
JOHNnDC June 17th, 2005, 12:59 PM Rob, I'd love a division. Just a caveat, from what I've read, you're getting the bum end of the deal :-) The Queen is much more expensive than the magnificum. But I really do think mine is quite pretty, my pic didn't do it justice.
I just repotted mine last night, so if you're still interested, let me know. I'm not sure if it should sit a few weeks here to make sure it's re-established or what. Again, if you're still interested, let me know how to proceed, and thanks.
dustyatticstuff June 17th, 2005, 07:43 PM Would it be possible for anyone to post photos of The Queen together with the magnificum so we could compare????
Eric Muehlbauer June 17th, 2005, 10:09 PM Maudiae "the Queen" is supposed to be much larger than Magnificum....in fact, its supposed to be the largest green paphs of its type. Years ago, the Orchid House had a brochure that showed "the Queen" compare with Alma Gavaert "Madam Mertens" and possibly Magnificum, showin that Queen was the largest of the group. Its still outside of my financial range. As for keeping the growths in one pot as opposed to several...Its a good insurance against disease to keep at least some separate. ..............Take care, Eric
