View Full Version : Cypripedium acaule in the wild (New Jersey)
Bonaventure June 15th, 2007, 09:59 PM Well I've finally cleared through and processed the photos from my digital camera from about a month ago (around Mother's Day). These are in southern Middlesex/northern Monmouth counties here off of Raritan Bay, which is a southern extension of New York Bay. The soil is thin humus over sand, very open mixed pine and hardwood forest.
This first beauty was a monster. Growing in full sun out of the trees and right on the bank of the sand road. I often find acaules growing almost within an open path and often with signs of being trammeled by hikers.
The remainder are in another location, more mesic, but on the slope of a hill with absolutely no competing undergrowth.
I saved pollen and now have pods on my Andrewsii and Ulla Silkens which bloomed later. Next time you guys send me pollen in time please!
Bonaventure

Tom Velardi June 16th, 2007, 07:26 PM I like the raspberry colored flower in your fourth post. Very nice.

Teresa, believe it or not there are a few scattered colonies of C. kentuckiense along the Texas/Arkansas line. If you could find someone nice enough to tell you where they are, it would definitely be worth a look! Arkansas itself has some of the largest populations in the entire range of this species where it is found alongside C. parviflorum v. pubescens (although they bloom at different times).
goldenrose June 16th, 2007, 10:04 PM Makes me want to go out & start looking for wild cyps!

Hmmmm, that would only be about a 7 HOUR drive for me....I might as well get on a plane and go look in Oregon....or how long is a flight to Japan? I know someone there who could tell me where to find cyps..;)
