View Full Version : I Replanted the World's Ugliest Front Yard!
Paphy57 May 28th, 2007, 05:03 PM I guess it isn't the world's ugliest front yard anymore! Please tell me what you think, and don't just say 'it's beautiful' when you really think it isn't! I need opinions here! I know it is not mulched at the moment!

I have maidenhair fern (I know you like that, Peter!), coral bells, acer palmatum 'viridis', some varieties of hosta, variegated jacob's ladder, bleeding heart, dwarf english boxwood bushes, and red sedum. I think there is going to be more soon!
Ron-NY May 28th, 2007, 05:09 PM Where is the water feature? It is difficult to give an opinion until things fill in.
rdlsreno May 28th, 2007, 05:13 PM Not bad Not bad at all!!:woohoo:
Ramon:D
goldenrose May 28th, 2007, 05:51 PM How much sun does it get? With my experience, hostas & maidenhair ferns are going to struggle or burn up with too much sun. Your other perrennials can take a good amount of sun. I don't think I'd add anything more because it's not filled in, as Ron indicated.
budsbud May 28th, 2007, 05:53 PM I love the acer!!! It looks good! How bad was it before? How about a before photo for comparison? Everything looks neatly planted but I agree with Ron...it is easier to judge when the plants fill in. But so far so good!!!
Paphy57 May 28th, 2007, 06:02 PM It actually only gets morning sun, and a little bit of evening sun. It is completely shaded the rest of the day because it is on the north side of the house.
I wish I had a pic of it before! You can imagine. A 40 foot bradford pear, 4 foot tall boxwood and arborvitae hedges. UGLY! With a capital U!
Paphraguy May 28th, 2007, 06:05 PM It is beautiful and I love the Japanese Maple and I'm glad you made it the focal point. Yes, I also love Madienhair fern (not all but just one kind that I like the best) and Hostas. Good job! :welldone:
budsbud May 28th, 2007, 06:09 PM Wow!!! It sounds like you did a lot of work!!! Well done then!!!!
Paphy57 May 28th, 2007, 07:03 PM OO! I did! I was slaving over a hot microwave! LOL!
All of the people in my neighborhood have shrubbery in their front yards. If they have japanese maples, then they are the red kind. I am the only person in my neighborhood with a green one. Also, I have concluded that nobody has perrenials in their front yard, because they just don't want to spend the time on it.
Tom Velardi May 28th, 2007, 07:52 PM My only question is, "where are the Cypripediums?"
Paphy57 May 28th, 2007, 07:53 PM I'm going to plant my reginae seedlings in there in a few years!!
hjohn May 28th, 2007, 10:16 PM I think it is looking pretty good.

cbarry May 28th, 2007, 11:23 PM I think it looks great! I will trust that you selected plants appropriate to the sun/water conditions. And I strongly recommend that you watch over anything that starts to take over. Even as a fairly experienced gardener, I have too much that is just too large for its space. I spent the better part of this weekend whacking out the overgrown stuff, not an insignificant task! My arms are proof of the battle I waged against the roses (I'd post a pic, but it would only be appreciated under the 'ugly of the month' contest ;)
I think your garden is lovely!
Congrats!
Carolyn
Slipperguy May 28th, 2007, 11:36 PM Lovely garden...I like it!
smartie2000 May 29th, 2007, 02:32 AM I would be so much happier if Japanese Maple were hardy in my city...
Nynaeve May 29th, 2007, 07:37 AM Your yard is great! Even before your planting...it was nowhere near the ugliest! My yard looks like a jungle right now! I guess I will trim the ivy when I can't find the door.
Paphi May 29th, 2007, 08:25 AM very beautifull:heart:
orchidlover May 29th, 2007, 01:09 PM Your yard is beautiful and you did just fine!
Grandma MC May 29th, 2007, 03:54 PM I like it. Please post a pic later after it fills in a bit.
