View Full Version : Growing babies
RickL May 27th, 2007, 09:45 AM They're Growing!
The first pic is P.philippinense babies from a joint breeding venture between Peter and I. They came out of flask early this spring.

Here's some henryanum seedlings that came in at the same time.

Here's an asortment of babies that I've been growing up since Jan 2005 (peircei). The lindlyanum spiked this spring but did not produce any decent buds. The spicerianums have multiple growths and should bloom this fall. The lowii have a ways to go, but the wardii is getting close to blooming size.

budsbud May 27th, 2007, 11:32 AM Wow!!!! That is so neat!!! I love slipper babies, now!!!
My wife won't have anymore babies...so, I gues slippers can be my alternative...LOL!
rdlsreno May 27th, 2007, 11:49 AM Your are nurturing them very well!!!! You should be a proud daddy!!:bravo:

Paphraguy May 27th, 2007, 12:35 PM Oh wow! I finally got to see my phil babies, thanks Rick and I can't wait to get mine whenever they are ready!

Thanks Ramon
I'm also hoping to encourage others to start breeding and raising seedlings. As you can see not everything takes 5+ years to get to breeding size from flask. I find this a fun avenue to add to basic culture and flowering of adult plants. It does take up space though!

Leaf growth has been pretty good, and I can see some new roots. My internal debate is to wait for bigger roots, and try to pack the compot so the media doesnt get tossed around, or to send them bare root, and let you replant them.
Any suggestions???

Hi Rick,
Either way is fine with me but as they grow bigger they will require space, so if you want, you can send them to me bare root and I'll just replant them myself. Thanks Rick and let me know what you decide!
Paphy57 May 27th, 2007, 10:19 PM LOL! I read the title, and thought, "Oh, dear....." LOL!

I'm pretty much down to my keepers on the older things, PM me if there is something in particular you are looking for.
Nynaeve May 28th, 2007, 10:47 AM Rick they look great! I had a pretty high mortality rate with mine. :(
I still have 10-15 left, but I was definitely not good enough about keeping temp, humidity, and airflow consistent enough. I lost some to brown rot, so I upped my airflow, then they dried out. Well, I have managed not to kill ALL of them anyway.

Teresa, I forgot you also have my (and Rick's) phil babies. Good luck!:fcrossed: I have never tried tiny seedlings before so I'm going to need all the good luck raising them. :fcrossed: Have the surviving ones grown any?
hjohn May 28th, 2007, 03:06 PM Rick, those look great and if you and Peter are going to part with a couple please let me know.

Paphraguy May 28th, 2007, 06:31 PM I can't wait to see how they turn out but it will be a few years before they mature and bloom and they are extremely slow growing. Here is a LINK (http://www.slipperorchidforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7689&highlight=philippinense) to my phil (the pollen parent).
