My wife just called me up and said that my first living fire flower fell off the plant. She said that the flower is in pristine condition. Is this common for Phrags? Heather, whats you opinion?

Phrags will drop their flowers when the seem like the are very fresh. It is normal, put it in a small dish of water, it will continue to look nice for sometime.

Actually, the flowers always fall in the interval between setting up your exhibit at an orchid show and the actual judging in the morning.

It does seem unfair that you get absolutely no warning. And that the flowers look so good laying there on the bench. But it is completely normal.

Yes, ,completely normal, I love when they make it long enough to havea couple open at once but it seems rare.

The first show I went to, there were a lot of Don Wimber and St. Peters exhibited, and I kept seeing blooms down. I remember thinking geez, who would be so rude as to knock a flower off!

I did have two open at once. The second Flower opened on Friday. So at least I had the weekend to look at two open at once.

this happens all the time. I want to see about freeze drying them or spray them with something to preserve them.

Set them in acrylic and make paperweights out of them...

Yes, most Phrag flowers drop promptly looking fresh as ever but the long petalled species do wilt first and then drop and sometimes they even stay on the stem til they completely dry out and crispify.

Would that really work? Anyone know? I've seen some bugs and have a snake head done like that, but I've never seen an orchid encased. The head is perfectly preserved without decay in a gel inside a glass globe.
