View Full Version : The three genera of pink and white slippers
fundulopanchax June 11th, 2005, 11:35 PM Here is a photo taken today of all three of the pink and white slippers. The poor Phrag schlimii is worse for wear - it is the last of the four flowers on the last plant to bloom this year. I hoped it would last until the Cyp reginae bloomed - the first flower on the first plant opened fully this afternoon so I rushed to get the shot before the schlimii flower fell off. All are very nice but it is tough to beat a Cypripedium :D

lostboy June 12th, 2005, 12:02 AM Thanks a bunch... Nice reginae...
Paphgirl June 12th, 2005, 06:50 AM That's wonderful - all of them blooming at once. Nice little family!
I love reginae, I think it is my favorite of the Cyps. Wish we had them down here.
Paphraguy June 12th, 2005, 07:50 AM Beautiful Ron! I know why you have schlimii and delenatii because they resemble the Cyps.
Heather, according to this site Native Orchids of USA (http://www.orchids.org/ooc/na_orchids/us_orchids_java.shtml) reginae grows wild in your state.
fundulopanchax June 12th, 2005, 08:03 AM There are probably some reginae hiding out still in MA. I have a newspaper story from the Boston paper the first decade in the 1900s about an enterprising teen who collected more than 1000 flowering stems everyday during bloom time to sell to the Boston florists. He collected and delivered by bicycle!
A person with whom I work notes that as a child in Framingham, she and her pals collected reginae slippers and had "boat races" with them on a local creek. She goes to the area still but says the reginae have disappeared under a parking lot. She reports many pubescens in the woods around her mother's home.

nyorchids June 12th, 2005, 09:49 AM nice picture
TADD June 12th, 2005, 07:02 PM Very nice! Awful late for delenatii to be blooming isn't it?
Park Bear June 14th, 2005, 11:28 AM very nice :clap2:
fundulopanchax June 14th, 2005, 03:26 PM I am not sure about the usual blooming season for delenatii. Given its color, I bought two that were in early bud at the NY Orchid Show in mid-April. Both opened just before May 1. The flower on the one not pictured here was largely shot by the time this photo was made. This flower is still going, but like the schlimii, it is not in the best of condition either!

Tom Velardi October 12th, 2005, 07:18 PM That's a great threesome Ron! I have to admit I like the Cyp too, but now we need to either breed a flower that lasts longer or has them in succession. Flowers for only a few weeks a year just isn't enough! :( Perhaps one of those Phrag x Cyp crosses will produce results one day, but how would you grow the plant :?: :!:
fundulopanchax October 12th, 2005, 08:34 PM Yes, the problem with Cyps is the length of flowering. Its a shame all the flowers of Cyp fasciculatum bloom simultaneously or it could be crossed with the others.

Gideon October 13th, 2005, 03:38 AM That is fantastic.
couscous74 October 13th, 2005, 10:13 AM Awesome photo - thanks.
joakim October 13th, 2005, 10:41 AM Cyp regine is the nicest I think, but look at the leafs of delantin :)
That would be something to have dark fgreen with withe spots on a Cyp.
