Hi Guys,
a few more flowering today.
The weather in the UK has finally broken and its raining properly in Cambridge for the first time since March 4th - 2 whole months !
See the colour of the grass in the background of the first photo. Talk about wierd weather and global warming.
It hasn't affected the cyps although one or two seem to be late into growth after the very mild winter.
Cyp Gisela.

This seems to be quite a deep coloured clone of this 'easy' hybrid.
Cyp Hank Small

Flowered with 2 on a spike last year as well. The stem is weak and needs support.
Cyp Gabriele.

Not quite open but the flower is huge compared to the last two.
I hadn't appreciated how much flower size can vary in these hybrids.
Gisela and Hank Small may only be an inch or so across whereas Gabriele may be 4 times that size.
The smallest one I have is x andrewsii which is tiny - the lip is around half an inch across.
If you want large flowers then it seems that you need kentickiense or fasiolatum in the parentage,

David

Beautfiul! That is the most intensely red Gisela I have seen, a marvelous flower.

The size of the flowers does vary enormously from hybrid to hybrid! Gisela makes up for fairly small flowers with so many of them!

Your Gisela is really exceptional, I've never seen one so richly colored.

It looks more like you are in southern California rather than the UK!

Hi Guys,
thanks for the comments.
The gabriele has opened a bit more and now I'm not sure of the parentage.
Its got the characteristic kentuckiense lip but the colour of the petals is way too red.
It should be predominantly yellow.
Looks more like kentuckiense x macranthos.
Anybody any thoughts ?

hi David,

lets see the fully open flower.
but for, what I have seen from the bud, is "too red", I think.

to see a "typical Gabriela" click my "cypripedium 2007" thread :-)

Without being any expert, the colors (in bud) are not to far away from Cyp. Philip (mac. x kent.).
See this link to Frosch
http://www.w-frosch.onlinehome.de/phili.htm
The wider lips for mac. compared with longer ones for fac. must be a way to tell the hybrids from these apart as well as color of the flower?
Just a thought.
Nice color on Gisela :)

Kind regards
Joakim
