View Full Version : Phrag. Yosemite Sam
L I Jane June 11th, 2005, 01:49 PM This has been open a couple of days.I bought this from a friend after she divided her plant back in 1996.I could never get it in bloom UNTIL this year.I assume it didn't like to be divided as my friend 's never did bloom & finally bit the dust. The petals measured 7 " today.
Hope fully the pic will come through as I 'm not really sure how to do this so this is a test

Paphraguy June 11th, 2005, 01:57 PM Very nice! Looks very much like the longifolium species.
Paphgirl June 11th, 2005, 02:04 PM Hi Jane, Looks like you've got the posting down !
Do you have another one of these? I thought I remembered you posting a photo of one last year, but perhaps it was someone else, and you just commented on having one that hadn't yet bloomed. I can't recall.
At any rate, good growing - you are very patient! Glad it finally paid off for you.
L I Jane June 11th, 2005, 02:21 PM No, I don't Heather but I'd asked every forum that I was in if anyone had it & if the $%(*^%$ thing ever bloomed! :D Now I can say I've bloomed every phrag that I've had even the yellow bessae which has since become defunct.
I really don't know the parentage but as Paphraguy says --it sure looks alot like longifolium--so maybe--somewhere along the line it was Phrag longifolium "Yosemite Sam' & it got shortened.Who Knows???
Paphraguy June 11th, 2005, 02:43 PM It is definitely a hybrid and most probably has longifolium and or even Geralda in it. Unfortunately, you may never find out but I hope you do!
Paphgirl June 11th, 2005, 02:45 PM Okay, that's what I must have been thinking. I just did a search and turned up a Grande 'Yosemite Sam' which, from the look of it, now that you've bloomed it, makes sense to me!
L I Jane June 11th, 2005, 04:12 PM Oh you guys I AM SO STUPID!!!
I just looked it up as well Heather & I actually got my post on another chat.Someone had answered along the line & said grande Yosemite Sam & even had a link to a picture.I must have not seen it.Now I'm going to update my records. DAMN old age.
Paphgirl June 11th, 2005, 04:37 PM Hehehe, I turned up the same thread, Jane, and it was the conversation I was remembering...(though I could only read the hits as I am banned from THAT silly forum also! What is it w/ me getting banned for promoting a SLIPPER forum on general orchid forums? This is not competition, a totally different thing! We are unique!)
Oh well, I'm happy to spend my time here, thank you!
(rant over)
At any rate Jane, I have a lot of those moments also and I'm only 33! I contend it has less to do w/ age than with us having too much to keep in our brains these days....life has gotten so complicated!
Paphraguy June 11th, 2005, 04:37 PM I'm glad the mystery is solved, thanks Heather! Jane how long are the petals?
pianoman June 11th, 2005, 04:42 PM You know, it kinds of LOOKS like Yosemite Sam the cartoon, with the hat and long twisty mustache. I guess all the bigger phrags do.
L I Jane June 11th, 2005, 04:56 PM You see Heather--it's not just you & me who's losing it but paphraguy as well. :lol:I posted above that the petals measured 7" today. Not sure if they will continue like caudatum.
Paphraguy June 11th, 2005, 05:24 PM Sorry Jane, I missed your petals description! Check out my Grande photos and mine is the golden variety and the petals reach 15" at the most.

Hahhaha! We have a running joke, when one of us forgets something, that we need to get more gingkoes! I guess we're all out then....
L I Jane June 11th, 2005, 06:13 PM Pete--I hope you didn't take me seriously but I meant it as a joke.
I'm not sure if the petals will keep elongating or not.I used to have one(phrag) that just kept growing the petals down everyday so that I used to keep it elevated so they wouldn't touch & stop growing. It was really ,really long petaled.Caudatum was in it I think & something else but I can't remember now.It had that same hooded dorsal & the inside was rather a sandy colour & greenish colour outside but this was quite a few years ago! :( .That one of yours is a beaut!!!

Thanks and yep, I know you were kidding and that is why we have that gingko joke here. Anyway, yes Grande is longifolium x caudatum.
