View Full Version : Maudiae pollination

I recently read where Paph Maudiae is supposed to be sterile or infertile. This after I tried pollinating a few Maudiae alba blooms. One was a selfing and the other was Black Cherry on Maudiae. Thing is that the resulting caps look as good as the callosum, Black Cherry, & delenatii caps that were pollinated at the same time. Will the Maudiae caps continue to develop and just produce infertile seed or will they abort? So far they've been on the plants for about 2 months (I'd have to check for the exact date). Anyone have any experience out there with this? Thanks
Gary

Maudiae (the hybrid) is not sterile, as a rule. Some of the more famous clones are 'sterile' or at least not good breeders. My particular favorite is Maudiae "The Queen". This plant is supposed to be triploid, and triploids are never very fertile. If you wanted to try breeding with it I have about five divisions... But, Maudiae was first created in 1900. It is has been remade countless time since. For good reason, it is consistently very nice.

The vinicolor and flame maudiaes have been very extensively used in modern vini breeding. For example, Paph. Emerald (curtisii x Maudiae 1920) is a very important parent. Curiously, I've never seen a green Emerald.

There have been plenty of hybrids made with Maudiae. 2104 hybrids with Maudiae in the background according to Wildcatt. 273 first generation hybrids alone...

Thanks for the help. I must have misunderstood the original (can't even remember right now where I read it). My Black Cherry is Fremont Peak X Red Maude and a very nice dark vinicolor. It also produces 2-3 flowers sequentially/ stem. So my intention for the cross is to see if the multifloral trait can be passed on to an album Maudiae, if I can get any album offspring in F1 or F2. I'm rather new to paphs, so the Maudiae selfing was originally a test of my pollination techniques. I'm fairly good at the Cattleya and Vanda Tribes, but I have yet to be successful with a Dendrobium. The Paphs are working well for me so far. Thanks again.
I'm familiar with Rob's Rules and practice them way too often.

Heck, you may have heard it from me, originally. I have bemoaned the infertility of "The Queen" on different occasions in different locations. *grin*

As to getting alba offspring in the F1, I'm guessing no. But you should get some in the F2. You might have to grow out a lot... I'd take some time to grow out a number of the F1, so that you can use only the best to cross to make your F2. It will be worth the extra time. Sounds like a good project, though.

Want some phillipinense alba pollen? That might go well with the alba Maudiae...

Sure, I'd love some philippinense alba pollen. I might have a maudiae left blooming. If not, I'll find some other worthy candidate. How long can it be kept in the frig?

Six months or so. My flowers aren't open yet, though.
