Hi guys, I am going to make the leap into long petaled phrags and since I have a really small growing area, there will likely only be one.
I have settled on either:
Phragmipedium Betheva (Phrag (pearcei x caudatum) (will the caudatum part of the cross be too big an issue regarding light?
or
Phrag Memoria Garren Weaver (Phrag (wallisii x pearcei)
They will be quite close to an east north/east window.
I really want to try a long petaled phrag so if you know of one that might be worth a shot, please let me know.

Hi Mary,
I think both hybrids should be of similar size and because of the pearcei parent, they should be smaller than the long petaled parents. I do think they will require higher light to bloom to their full potential but why don't you try one and see how it goes? If it keeps growing and making new growth and or produce inferior looking flowers and fewer in numbers, then that should tell that you to provide higher brighter light. Let us know which one you decide to get.:D

we can't find mini grande in Canada yet:(
Yes they are both similar in size, very compact. They will be as compact as a lower light long petal one can get. Really small compared to phrag grande and other longifolium hybrids
Eugene Conroy potenially can get big because of the longifolium. The one offered at the sales table by that Calgarian vendor was large.
Phrag warscewiczianum is a compact species, but requires higher light. And phrag wallisii as well

Hi guys, i think i will go with the garren weaver.
does anyone have any experience with the following paphs and phals?
paph rothchildinum
phal amabilis
phal venosa
or any of the Phalaenopsis violacea? (not the Malaysian form)
do the phals grow the same as the crosses in terms of lighting, humidity?
regards

Yes phals are low to med light and will tolerate household conditions. Phalaenopsis violacea is more difficult, (well I have a phal bellina which is similar, I do not know why I have difficulties but I got it as a sickly plant anyways, and other people has had difficulties.) But my hybrid Phal Princess Kaiulani is doing better.
paph rothchildinum is high light and slow growing. I think the vendor in mind is selling seedlings (I'm not sure, but the price suggests seedling)....it will take years to bloom

Paph rothschildianum is a large species, very slow growing and they do require very bright light and warm temps to grow and flower happily. Most Phals are medium light loving plants and they too require warm temps and high humidity to stay happy.
