They need medium to bright light, and no mine are in a greenhouse, they need to be grown warm to hot.

This should be a good size flower too.
It was about 10cm (4 in)

Fragrance? Niceley flowered!
I can't recall if it was fragrant or not.

The greenhouse where I volunteer(Carolina Orchids has a plethora of bulbos) Probably 1000 or so plants. I have learned that when Tom Nasser(owner) tells me or someone to sniff one it isn't because it smells pretty. Some of them do smell very pretty , some smell ok, and others smell like S#!+!

Gideon,

This is not Bulbophyllum lobii , I think it's a hybrid between B. lobii and B. echinolabium

Could you verify the label please, but nevertheless it's very very cute

The label read lobbii, but you never know. Why do you say it is a hybrid?

Because it's not a lobii for sure.

Compare with other picture of lobii on the internet

Being one of the more widespread species, Bulbophyllum lobbii is quite variable. The Australian Orchid Review recently had an article on this species and from memory there was a picture of a plant that was similar...

In cultivation, we seem to see Bulb lobbii var lobbii more often, eg famous awarded cultivar 'Kathy's Gold'.

Either way, if yours isn't the actual species... it is very lovely.

Finally re Bulb echinolabium, here is a picture of the flower from a recent benching in our orchid society:-

That is how a real lobbii should look like

After looking at many, many photos on the internet, I must say that this is probably the most variable orchid I have seen, the range of colours, shapes and forms are enormous. Just look at this page. http://www.bulbophyllum.at/Bulbophyllum-lobbii.htm

So I mailed the vendor this morning explaining the situation, and he just let me know that it was infact a Bulb Jersey a hybrid lobbii x echinolabium.

Great call paphjoint.

I have updated my photo.

Great Detective work you guys! Congrats on the real ID of this plant. I hate it when this happens. As a grower it must be kind of embarassing to sell something mislabelled even if it was not you fault. At the greenhouse where I work we have a blooming plant labelled as Paph ang thong var album x concolor var album... However I think it is Conco Lawre(concolor x lawrenceanum). We just recently acquirred these plants, but we have a Paph ang thong var album x concolor var album in bloom and it looks nothing like the one getting ready to bloom(the Conco Lawre)
