View Full Version : "Obsession with Orchids"
Paphraguy March 15th, 2007, 01:28 PM I just remembered an orchid show called Obsession with Orchids that PBS had aired a couple of years ago. Has anyone seen it? I think it was the best orchid show that I have ever watched about orchids, better than The Orchid Hunter. I have it recorded on my PC, so I put together some screencaps for you all to enjoy.:D

This segment shows the poaching of Paph delenatii in the wild. A guy just rips it out of the ground and wraps it in burlap. Very uneasy for me to watch.

Paphraguy March 15th, 2007, 01:36 PM This guy lives in Manhattan and grows his orchids in a greenhouse on a rooftop. He has over 7,000 orchids. He said it all started with a couple at his office window and then he was struck with orchid fever, sounds familiar? He has many different orchids species and hybrids including many different slippers. Here he shows his Paph rothschildianum that he had as a seedling and finally got it to bloom after 7 years! He spreads the leaf span to show the audience that it reached over 24 inches before it bloomed for him.

Paphi March 15th, 2007, 02:01 PM very pretty nice fotos:clap2: .ty.
Hien March 15th, 2007, 02:32 PM I only see part of it.
But I bet you the ripping of the delenatii out of the ground is staged with a "delenatii stuntplant" just like those actions in scifi movies.
the director probably has the plant put in the ground 5 minutes before he says "roll" , then return the plant to the nursery after filming.:p
A poacher would really want to be on film like an American Idol wanna-be?
nah!
Hien
ps: I really want to tell a similar experience of why I do not take everything a document tell me very seriously.
There is a pbs program about Vietnam during the war years. the translation going on & on about how the American soldiers just came out of nowhere one day & plunder & pillage the darn innocent village, where every one are so peacefully minding their own daily business.
Then, I heard the supposedly innocent villagers boast to the interviewer of how everybody participate in the action, they have children making sharp stakes for booby trap, old men watching for troop movement, how they dig hiding place for the north vietnames troops inside the house. The translater of course conveniently not translate one word of this but saying something else totally opposite.:p .I guess they did not think these propaganda documents may be watched by peoples who do understand the language.:p

I'm sure it was a reanactment but still it was uneasy knowing that it actually happens as we speak. I doubt any real poachers would want to be caught in the act on film!
Slipperguy March 15th, 2007, 03:46 PM Hey Pete...never heard of the show...can I get a copy of that also? thnx
eplants02 March 15th, 2007, 05:01 PM My botany teacher gave me her copy to watch it back when I was in college. Simply amazing!!! I watched it a couple of times. I would definately agree with you, Paphraguy, that this video is one of the best orchid shows out there. I love how they showed an orchid seed germinating...simply mind bogging...how something so tiny becomes sooo beautiful.
Any orchid grower should definately watch this video.

Yes, I totally agree, orchid lovers should definitely watch it! Not only very informative but quite entertaining as well. And the photography is just amazing to watch especially those tiny seedlings grow in to big plants and pollination of that Paph by a fly was pretty neat. Those bucket orchids and Paph villosums were also spectacular growing in the wild.
orchidlover March 15th, 2007, 05:45 PM I missed this one but I enjoyed The Orchid Hunter. Thanks for posting the pictures.
Slipperguy March 15th, 2007, 06:30 PM  Now I cant wait to watch it...thnx Pete!:woohoo:

Slipperguy March 23rd, 2007, 10:06 PM I watched this tonight and WOW! it is the best orchid show I have ever watched about orchids...my eyes were glued to the screen but my dad kept interrupting me so I'm going to watch it again...thnx Pete...
Paphy57 March 23rd, 2007, 10:22 PM That delenatii......
I feel so sorry for the orchids that are wild collected! I hope that the poachers are caught and arrested for taking the orchids! This reminds me of the victorian orchid 'boom' because of the taking of wild orchids. Most of the orchids that they took died on the journey to europe, and most of the others dies in the hothouses that were heated to 100 degrees and had no air circulation!

Not only the early english & european collectors did not know how to grow orchid just like you said. The collectors for the rich also burn the spots that they took the orchids to destroy whatever left so they can monopolize.
The present time collectors are poor farmer/indigenious tribal peoples trying to eek out a living, believe me, their governments don't care whether they live or starve to dead. I will never ever condemn them until I live their life for one day.
Too bad, their government could give them license (the same way we reserve the right for native americans to fish and harvest certain species) and they could sell the harvest plants. Imagine 25.00 US dollar for a delenatii would feed a family for couple months.
The whole universe is interdependent, when someone dies of poverty & starvation, the make up of that universe already change, think that way, and our hearts will be much less rigid.
We tend to concentrate our thought on the orchids, and forget about the human suffering.

Hi Ray,
Orchid Hunter and Obsession with Orchids were two special orchid documentary shows aired on PBS a few years ago and they are not available for sale anywhere as far as I know. Send me a PM if you want to watch the shows.

newbie December 16th, 2010, 09:43 AM Whats wrong with crossing a paph to a whole different type of orchid? I'm sure it can be done but the million dollar question is will it produce babies? LOL and if it does then I wonder what they would look like.
orchidnut57 December 18th, 2010, 10:02 PM I am with you about feeling uneasy about the way some folks handles what we concider 'Natures Gifts'
