Yes they are!!
Nynaeve March 12th, 2007, 12:12 AM I have some banana trees in my backyard. They never make bananas!:(

I could be wrong but I think there are some ornamental banana trees that never produce bananas.

*GASP* say it isn't so! I see my neighbors banana trees making fruit. All mine makes are little baby banana trees at the bottom. I think it's probably bad that daddy came along and chopped them down thinking they were dead. Then they started to grow back. They used to be very tall and now they are very short.... :poke:

 Oh no, maybe he is chopping them down before they actually set fruit? You know they only produce flowers at maturity and maybe even you need male and female trees side by side to reproduce, I don't know. I do know that once they flower, the mature trees die and then new baby ones grow from the bottom.

Well he only chopped them down the one time. He did the same thing with my orange tree that he though was frozen. I told him never to chop anything down again without my permission. I told him things that look dead aren't always dead. (and stay AWAY from my nobile dens!)
I think I remember hearing they needed to get a certain height to produce fruit. I guess we are starting over then with the banana trees. Oh well. They were there when we moved in so it's not like I am majorly attached to them or anything. It would just be nice to see a nanner!
Paphy57 March 12th, 2007, 08:23 PM OK, I will unfoil all of the myths!
1. there are 3 types of naners: Ornamental, Cooking, and Dessert. The dessert bananas (Cavendish, Orinoco) are the bananas that we buy at the store and some need two in flower at the same time, and some pollinate themselves. Cooking bananas are your plaintains, and ornamentals (ex. Ornata types) are mostly part of the rhodoclime (Upright Flower) banana group and produce little bananas.
2. Teresa, Could I ask what type of bananas they are? they almost always make fruit except on very rare occasions. You can divide the Babies at the bottom to make more trees too.
3. Most of them have to be a certain height to flower. When they are about to flower, they send out a small leaf called a flagleaf. then the flower comes out.
I could send some interested people Babies of banana trees that will make fruit, but I will alert my banana friend, who owns the GH (NanNerTroPiKs7) to read this thread, answer any Questions about bananas that I don't have the answer to!

Oh this is great! Now I am going to become obsessed about my naners...:poke:
Well I do not know what kind they are because they were here when I moved into this house. But right now I fear they are dead because we had a freeze not too long ago. There is nothing left of them but stubs now. They were tall trees that grew above the wood fence around the yard, approximately 6ft high or more.
I think it would be really fun to grow a banana tree and have fruit. Could I grow it in a pot in my atrium? Can I eat it? Will it taste good or tast yucky? I once ate an orange off a tree in the backyard and it tasted like craaaaaap!
Paphy57 March 12th, 2007, 08:50 PM Could I have a description of it and a picture??? I might be able to identify it. You might be able to grow one in your atrium. The friut tastes quite sweet and is good. they might come back up from the freeze, but are you interested in me sending you a edible fruiting banana?

IT is an orinoco!! I am 90% sure of that. They are very tall growers and make edible fruit! They take awhile to flower. Does it have a powdery trunk??

Cool! I will have to check on the powdery trunk. Right now it is raining cats and dogs, and all I see back there are brown stubs where the bananas used to be. However, I will go over to my neighbors and look at his nanners.
NanNerTroPiKs7 March 15th, 2007, 06:55 PM Hello all, new to the forum and host to the GH. Uhm basically your right on about the basics of bananas. Whoever said that they think their bananas are dead because of a freeze, dont give up. Almost all banana corms are hardy to 8 or higher some very rarely are super tropical. Yours will prob resprout come the warm weather like a perrenial. For all who just have the "tiny" bananas, they can be tasty too if you can pollinate them. Only thing is they have very hard seeds so its more of a taste rather than a snack. But other than that the names nate or nathan doesnt matter, mostly into bananas but i got 3 paphs a jewel orchid and a phal. Oh, the 1 who has the picture posted. I didnt read it or catch it maybe u described the flower but there are multiple bananas that grow very large and have powdery trunks. All fairly common. Nick is most likely correct, orinoco is very common but ice cream, manzano and a few other large edibles look almost identical. Only way to tell is by the flower!
