View Full Version : big surprise this morning
cyprimaniac March 10th, 2007, 12:49 PM hi guys,
big surprise this morning, when I saw the first flower from my Cyps this year.
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2859/shanxiense1a1qw6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I bought some rhizoms from a guy in the Netherlands.
he told me, they are "Cypripedium macranthos alba".
Immediately I remembered the wonderfull "macranthos albas" from Paul and Ron earlier this year :woohoo:
"unfortunately" THIS one came out, the only one, which produced a flower from about ten rhizoms.
The others failed to flower.
Nevertheless, Cypripedium shanxiense is a real gem.
I am happy to have it. :woohoo:
enjoy.
best
Dieter
Ladyslipper Grower March 10th, 2007, 12:56 PM Hi Dieter
Congratulations on your first flowering cyp. Shanxiense is not one of my favorites, but it is still a nice cyp.
Are these growing outside or in pots in a greenhouse? I know Germany had a very warm winter so I am curious as to where they are growing.
best wishes,
Paul
Paphraguy March 10th, 2007, 12:59 PM :congrat: Beautiful!
smartie2000 March 10th, 2007, 01:04 PM Yup it is very pretty:iagree:
Paphi March 10th, 2007, 01:06 PM so pretty.
cyprimaniac March 10th, 2007, 01:07 PM hi, "Speedy Paul",
I received the rhizoms in January, so I had to plant them into a pot and placed in the unheated green house. but now we have sunny weather, so temps of about 14 - 20 celsius at days.
yes I know, you love the "whites" especially :woohoo:
OK, I too.
hope to flower my first reginae alba this year.
love the pic from your "yellow ventricosum" (R.B: web site)
Good luck for your "Madame Regina experiment" :woohoo:
best
Dieter
Justin March 10th, 2007, 01:42 PM Very impressive! I admire cyp growers.

Slipperguy March 10th, 2007, 02:31 PM What a beauty...I love it!
Tom Velardi March 11th, 2007, 08:45 AM It is amazing what passes as "macranthos alba"! I like this species, but I don't think it will have very nice hybrids in general. That isn't an easy species to grow either. Please let us know how it does for you.
cyprimaniac March 11th, 2007, 01:26 PM hi there,
there are reported two hybrids with the C. shanxiense.
one of them is still "unnamed" : C. calceolus X C. shanxiense,
(pics on Rons web site, or on Werner Froschs web sites)
the other one is C. macranthos X C. shanxiense = C. x catherinae.
this hybrid was also made artificially by Mr. Pinkepank from Germany,
and is named C. Henning Pinkepank.
Its noth "breath taking", but REALLY NICE,
a friend sent me a pic sometime ago.

What do you think about it?

Hey Dieter,
Well, I've seen the natural hybrid with calceolus before and I think it is just so-so. As for x catherinae, I have a similar opinion. I definitely like the parents better than the cross, at least from the pics I've seen so far. Still, if I had one I wouldn't kick it out of my garden!!!
Thanks for the lovely pics and helping keep the Cyp forum going. There is hope, spring is nearly here!
Tom
phragfan March 11th, 2007, 10:46 PM I think they are gorgeous! Think Spring...
goldenrose March 12th, 2007, 12:51 AM Spring is here, well, trying! Makes me want to try some cyps!
Slipperguy March 13th, 2007, 02:24 PM Fantastic cyps...
fundulopanchax March 13th, 2007, 02:30 PM Hi, Dieter,
Congratulations! I like C shanxiense but do not have any. Any plans to self it? :-)

cyprimaniac March 14th, 2007, 03:41 AM hello guys,
the rhizom is fairly small, not so well rooted,
main interrest is, that it survives.
but I think about pollinating, have some days more :)
but the rhizom was very "long" and I made 3 divisions :)
lets see, what happens, will report later.
best wishes
Dieter
Paphi March 15th, 2007, 09:26 AM very pretty flower:love:
montanum March 18th, 2007, 02:45 AM Hi Dieter,
Lucky! C shanxiense is very unusual in cultivation. Good luck with it!
I read somewhere that if the flowers aren't pollenated, the pollen eventually turns gooey and drips onto the stigma, self-pollenating the flower. Let me know if this actually happens.
Can you post a photo of the whole plant, for scale?
Best,
Ross

hi there,
from my plant I cannot state this.
the polliniums are sooo "dry", that I doubt, that I could pollinate the plant.
the pollinum did not stick very well
Have to wait to see the success, hopefully it did.
my plant is a fresh planted rhizom.
it is about the size of C. parviflorum var. parviflorum.
maybe next season it will grow larger with larger (double) flower :D

cyprimaniac April 10th, 2007, 09:44 AM hi there,
as I heared from a known Cypripedium specialist,
my plant is not the C. shanxiense,
but it is a natural hybrid between the C. calceolus and C. shanxiense.
:iagree:
Nevertheless, its a nice color form for me.

fundulopanchax April 11th, 2007, 06:31 PM Dieter, I think that yours is a very impressive flower - hopefully this hybrid will become more widespread in cultivation.
