I'm kinda super anal about this, thanks to some coaching at the start of my collecting days. However, there's been some uncertainty and I am looking for some clarity. Am I listing correctly, or should the genus not be italicized? Feel free to let me know if anything else is listed incorrectly!
An example:
Paphiopedilum Booth's St. Bern 'War Eagle' HCC/AOS x Baby Gland 'War Eagle' HCC/AOS (St. Swithin x Berenice) x (wilhelminiae x praestan)
Thank you!

species are listed with Genus capitalized and species lowercase
i.e. my damn Paphiopedilum rothschildianum will never bloom
hybrids are written with both the Genus and the Hybrid Name capitalized
i.e. I wish there were more Paph. Dragontale around.[/list]

:welcome: Welcome to the forum! And thanks!
Actually it was the italics/bold issue I was trying to figure out. My lists are actually different. I fixed one and not the other. Still not sure which was correct.

I'm not aware of any requirement to italicize only the genera in the science world. Before the advent of word processers, the latin name could be in ( ) following the common name, or underlined. In reports I do now, all latin names (all taxa levels) are italicized. But these are conventions for scientific text.

According to my college biology teacher, all latin genus and species names are to be italicized or underlined when written...hybrid names are not italicized unless they are a natural hybrid.
ex.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum or Paphiopedilum rothschildianum
Paphiopedilum Gemstone's Randchild (rothschildianum x randsii)
Paphiopedium xwenshanense
Just about anything latinized in the name(form, variety, etc.) should be italicized, except the word form or variety.
ex.
Paphiopedilum stonei var. platytaenium
Hope this doesn't just add to the confusion.

No, very helpful! That's exactly what I was looking for, Jon! I thought that both Genus and Species were italicized also.

I'm just as anal about my collection...and I carry my palm pilot with excel on it to keep track of the whole collection and of who got repotted when, who's in spike/bloom, who's in the greenhouse, who's in the basement, who's outside, who's on loan to grandma for blooming(and they're all outlined by tribe, family, etc according to the latest Dressler list).......
I'm still amazed I haven't pulled all my hair out, but it's another facet of the hobby I really enjoy.
If you have any other questions let me know, I've probably spent hours researching the same question.
