View Full Version : Orchids on a TV show

I was watching last week's episode of Cold Cases and one of the characters grew orchids inside her home, a nice big mansion actually. The lead character asks her what kind of flowers they were and she replies, "Orchids...Cattleya orchids". Here is a still shot from the scene and as you can tell, you don't see one single Catt, mostly Cymbs, a couple Dends maybe and a Phal but no Catts! As usual, the TV producers never do their research.

I saw the same show, and didn't see a cattleya either. The most prominent plants shown were a phalaenopsis and the cymbidium. I'm sure this isn't an isolated case of incorrect details from Hollywood. I just read "The Orchid Thief" and it has a bunch of incorrect details but is still interesting.

Nope it's not the first time nor will it be the last time, they do it all the time. There was one show I watched not too long ago, don't remember which show it was but the actress playing a character was holding a glass case which contained an orchid plant and when asked by another character why she had a plant inside a glass case, she proudly replies loudly with her head high, "It's my prized 'Papheepidallium' orchid" and of course the orchid in that glass case was an ordinary Phal hybrid in bloom!

If you watch Boston Legal you will see a lot of orchids on the sets, thats the set department,s work. When I was working on TV shows I would catch a lot of mistakes like that all the time, and they would say nobody will know. Time is money. Jim.

You would think Martha Stewart would know better. One time she had an Oncidium on her show and she called it a Dendrobium.

Here is another one which is just hilarious! I have posted these photos before in a different thread but can't seem to find it. The still shots are from an episode of Nip Tuck. Alec Baldwin plays a surgeon (or a dentist I don't remember) who is also an avid orchid grower and breeder. Can you see the BIG mistake they had made?

It looks like he's sort of pollinating a brassia hybrid with pollen from a paph.
I like the tools he's using to pull the pollen from the paph, and with gloves on!
Never tried that, might be a challenge.

:iagree: Now that's entertainment.

I feel like such a slob now since I just use scrounger toothpicks, and not wearing an ascot.

Has anyone seen BEST IN SHOW? I think they should make an orchid people version of it, I think it would be just as hilarious. Orchid people can be just as crazy as dog people. Any professional screenwriters here? I think it will make a big hit like BIS!

I agree a movie about the orchid "culture" would be very interesting and entertaining. With all of the obsessed people involved in orchids, there are more than a few interesting characters, many nice ones, and a lot of fun stories to tell. The movie "Adaptation" was involved with the book "The Orchid Thief" and that's about as close as I've seen.
The only people crazier than orchid people are the dog people......

:iagree: They can throw in the whole Kovach drama and all the crazy stuff that goes on in the lives of obsessed orchid people. They can actually start the movie with the early rich orchid collectors with all the real life drama, thrills and even murder on early orchid hunts in the jungles of South America and Borneo to present times, the whole kovachii saga. I think it would make a very entertaining movie, I would definitely watch it!:D

CAREFUL ... I'm a dog person ...BUT..... I have real dogs, not foo-foos! Those of us in AGILITY get down & dirty! I did see Best In Show - DIDN't like it - it was BORING, I could hardly wait for it to be over, but just like a real conformation show!
Now everyone has found out about my other obsession/addiction!

I'm a dog person too and I even tried the whole conformation show (I used to show my mastiffs when I much younger) thing and I just felt it wasn't for me. I still have mastiffs but don't show them. Surprisingly, a lot of dog show people that I know also didn't like the movie but I found it quite funny. I wonder if it would have the same affect if a movie was made about obsessed orchid people!:D

I watched Adaptation and I didn't like it at all but I liked the book. I think ORCHID FEVER will make a much better film than ORCHID THIEF.

Oh I loved both movies! Adaptation was written by my favorite screenwriter, Charlie Kaufman. He also wrote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich among others. And as for Best In Show, dry humor is the best kind of humor! I laughed almost all the way through the movie. I took some film classes and I do know a screenwriter, but only by aquaintance. I kinda lost contact with him after the class ended. But, eccentric orchid lovers would make a great plotline! I'll pitch it to him next time I see him.:D

Hey that would be great, excellent! Also tell him about the recent discovery of kovachii (the find of the century!) which caused so much drama in the orchid world.

hea hea hea lay off the "real" dog people, I happen to be one of them. We do tend to obsess about things. I saw many of my "firends" in BIS but was not as impressed with it as some of the non dog people were. A little too close to home I guess.
There is alot of down and dirty work in the Comformation world too you know. You just have to have the drive to breed the best of the best and ignore all the politics. I guess that goes with anything you want to breed to improve it. Very intense indeed.
I now can really not afford to show my dogs and also have health issues to deal with. It is a very expensive hobby. I am thinking the orchid thing mybe a little less so but who know how far I will take it. Just a beginner here. Atleast you do not have to clean pens every day. lololololol.
Along with the birds I am now into and the art you can tell I am very obsesive. LOLOLOLOLOL

Dawn, I can imagine how expensive dog showing gets! I have a horse...I don't show him but I go along with others to the horse shows to help and watch. SO expensive!!!! :poke: I've pretty much decided my horsie is just going to be a pleasure horse.:D

Yes, dog showing can get very very expensive and a lot of traveling involved. I remember getting many mean looks and glares from other competitors and I was only a young kid back then. I couldn't believe some people could get downright rude and nasty in the dog showing business and that was one of the reasons I lost interest in showing my dogs. But don't get me wrong, I have also met a few nice people who really helped me and guided me in the beginning.

Our next door neighbors were big time dog showers and they were always gone most of the weekends...they even bought a huge rv just for that purpose.

yes they do. You really would not belive it. At least in the states we no longer have many benched shows. I have heard stories about England, where most shows are benched, about compeditors cutting off a dogs hair ect if they are left unattended. I was never that competitive. Too nice a dog shower.
