Paphgirl March 6th, 2005, 11:21 AM Anyone have anything up for grabs, or that they are looking for?
I don't really have anything at the moment, but it was so quiet in here I thought I'd try and get things started!
Actually, I'm looking for a mature sanderianum, but I don't have much hope that anyone out there has one they'd like to unload! :)
Anonymous March 6th, 2005, 12:25 PM I'd love to know the going rate for larger sizes. I was offered a 14" LS today for $250. I'll wait a couple extra years...I settled for the baby/cheap version...I'm thinking it'll bloom any day now...if that day's about 8 years from now! :?

I'd be curious to know also. Honestly, that's not a bad price for 14"! Considering some of the prices I've been looking at today on line for the babies. Orchids Ltd. has one in a 2" pot for half that!
The one I have is about 8", actually, growing rather at a quick pace, but I think I could fit one more in! :P
Anonymous March 6th, 2005, 02:26 PM 5" LS for mine that I pulled out of a compot in Jan (mine's same parents as yours). I know of 4 growers offering slightly smaller than that for $45. One of the DC area growers is only 10 mins from me and has 'em for that. $90 for 7-9". But, I don't ever see the larger sizes offered. I haven't paid more than 2 digits for any of my plants...yet...

You're lucky to be so close to a good vendor! That would be wicked dangerous for me! 7-9"is the largest I've seen offered, also.
So, what are the thoughts on whose doing the best breeding of sanderianum at the moment. Japanese?American? just curious!!
Anonymous March 8th, 2005, 06:56 AM And I can get to Woodstream in about an hour...between that and Al's, it can be dangerous! I am trying to find out more about sanderianum "Maki"...not sure if it's worth picking up a small one of those or not (speaking of Japanese stock).

hehe, yeah, that's what I was referring to, actually. I did some searching on 'Maki' yesterday myself but didn't come back w/ much more info.

Avery, just out of curiosity how much do you sell your blooming size sanderianums for?
avery March 8th, 2005, 08:57 AM Hehe , how about 6oo for a 2 growths' plant 24"+ leaf span with all permits and shipping charges included ?? :D
Paphraguy March 8th, 2005, 09:00 AM Hihi , how about 5oo for a 2 growths' plant with all permits charges included ?? :D
Wow, good price! I have never imported plants before, so it makes me very nervous. What cross/clone are they? I'm just very curious this morning. :) A BS sand is listed on ebay for $1,250.00. Yikes!
Paphgirl March 8th, 2005, 09:28 AM I agree, that is a nice price, Avery. I worry about how long shipping takes. I've never imported anything either and don't know a whole lot about how you shippers handle it, actually.
avery March 8th, 2005, 10:13 AM I did exported paph seedlings to US in the past . Usually I will apply for the CITES permit and PHYTO cert after payment is settled. It takes about a week's time before I can get the document in hands. Ordered plants will be depotted , washed and air dried and shipped bare-rooted the next day. I sent through Express Mail Service (EMS) and it takes about 4 days from here to US. Paph are tough and can last for very long time during shipping if packed well in the right way.
Since actual plant name Paph. sanderianum will be written on CITES pemit, there won't be any problem concerning the legal trading. It is simple ! :D
Paphgirl March 8th, 2005, 06:09 PM Well, Avery, I am completely tempted, I must say! However, I'm going to have to still save a bit until I could take you up on this, both space and pennies! It would be fun and thrilling to try to import something, especially something so rare and precious, though I am still scared! I'm having a terrible time at the moment getting a conch shell (no live thing, just the shell!) into the country from Grenada. It is an $8 shell with about $1000 worth of my laundry wrapped around it! It has been stuck in New Jersey, for over two weeks now! GRRR!!! So a live plant on CITES lists is a little daunting, I'm afraid.
Who else has imported? I'm curious to hear experiences. If I were to do this, I would want to know a lot more about that!
Oh, Avery, by the way, what is the cross of your sanderianum? If you don't mind me asking? Thanks so much for helping out our curious natures today!!
avery March 8th, 2005, 07:54 PM Anytime you want one , just ask ! They are always waiting for you !! In my previous experience, it is not that difficult to import these things with valid papers, and they are not imported in large amount like air freight . I think it can be easier then importing Shell ! :D
I have some clones from US and some from Taiwan. These are not my cross since they were imported years ago and I wasn't making my own breeding stocks that time ... Even those OZ replacement sanderianum did not have clonal names on it ... I think they should use some nice ones ...
I am making my own ones recently and hope one day in the near future I can offer my own sanderianum seedlings ! They are growing fast here !!! :D
Paphgirl March 8th, 2005, 08:02 PM They are growing fast here !!! :D
Really? Fast sanderianum, huh? Cool!! 8)
Okay, Avery, you are on - should I decide I want to do this, I will let you know! I really would love to do it, even as just an experiment, but it would be such an expensive experiment for sure, and one I will need to save for, for a while.
Paphgirl March 9th, 2005, 10:56 AM Avery,
Might it be possible for you to sometime post a photograph of your large sanderianum(s)? I would love to see one, even if it is just growing with the other plants.
Thank you!!
avery March 13th, 2005, 09:24 PM Hey , Heather ! I'd be love to show you ! Ha ha ... don't beg me to ship you when you see them !!! :D
I still have to solve the problem of uploading photos and displaying links ... Please keep patient at the moment !
