Hello all, this is my first thread & I am glad to be able to read some really great information on esp. LadySlippers. I am looking into getting the following orchids and would like some feedback on possible successes or problmes I might encounter.
I selected the Paph Harold Koopowitz, Paph Weather Vane and Phrag. Mary Bess because I thought they would grow/bloom in my north/east apartment window. I get a fair bit of indirect light in the winter and about 6 hours in the summer. I have a light shade in this window which I lower when the window is in direct summer sun. The plants would be in my living room so would get normal humidity. (I do have a humidifyer which is on for about 8 hours a day in the winter) in the bedroom. Do you know how big these plants might get? thanks for anyfeedback. m

Hi Mary,

:welcomesof: Thanks for joining! :D

I don't grow those hybrids but I think they should do fine on your windowsill. If possible, you provide some kind of supplemental artificial lighting in addition to natural lighting.

Harold Koopwitz is a great plant, I have seen some decent sized ones. Roth can get to be a large size and I have had a couple of malipoense & was good size and both can handle higher light levels. I don't know who Weather Vane is a cross of & Mary Bess should be OK size wise for windowsill. For best results, you should supplement with artificial lighting, they can handle lower light levels but daylight length is important & 6 hrs isn't gonna cut it! Hope my 2 cents worth helps!

Hi there! Great choices of slippers! HK can get quite large for a windowsill, but if you can make room for it, the blooms will be worth it!

Welcome.

I don't know about the Paphs, but the Phrag can get quite large, though it will take awhile. Until then, it should be fine for a windowsill. And then you can divide it.

Harold Koopwitz is compact compared to some roth primaries. BTW the sun you should get in that window will be early morning and you shouldn't have to shade it.
