Kinda pricey subscription. I can't use Wildcatt, I think it is PC only.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I really enjoy it and even went to the trouble to collect an almost complete set. They use MANY color photos and that is why it is so pricey.

PS If you ever need any info from WildCatt I would be more than happy to supply you with it...just pm me. Before I got it I had an online buddy who supplied me with all the info I could want and I would be happy to pay it forward.

Jon

Thanks Jon, you're a peach!
Today made me really want to get AQ.
Just to see that Masdie, even! LOL!

I wish more ochid software people endorsed Macs, makes me nuts!!
I found the use of pre-awarded plant slides, and Wildcatt very interesting today at the judging! I never knew all that was involved in this!

The 5 to 8 pages of pictures alone are with the Awards Quarterly price, I suppose. (Nothing in a picture ever looks the same in reality) If you actually need to search the data in these issues, you need Wildcat to do it efficiently and quickly. For instance the info on "How many Jason Fichers have received awards?" could spread over several years of issues and indexes but is only a click away on Wildcatt.

Are you aware that the Royal Horticulture Society has a free online searchable database of all registered orchid hybrids. From this you can find the parents of any registered grex or you can find the grex by entering the parents.

About halfway down this page:
http://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/registration_orchids.asp
under the heading "Searching the International Orchid Register"

It will not help with *awarded* plants; for that you would need Wildcatt or Awards Quarterly or the help of somebody online who has them. Lots of people in many different forums just post a query and somebody will answer.

Thanks Al, for the info. and your input. Yes I am aware of the RHS site, thanks for the link for others also.

I guess I'll for now take Jon up on his offer, but I may still subscribe.

Ditto on the offer to look up on wildcatt, if there's anything you need just ask. in fact, would anyone find it helpful to create another subforum for wildcatt look up? that way it'll all be in one spot and anyone with a wildcatt look up question can ask, etc.

I think it is a great idea, but wonder about legal issues - I mean, since it is a fairly expensive program, would there be any chance of getting into trouble if we had a forum dedicated to Wildcatt?

Yes, I also agree it is a good idea but I would also like to know the "legality" before we create a separate Wildcat forum.

We're not exposing their codes (which would be a violation), but rather merely giving out information that is actually available elsewhere as well. They don't own copyrights to the cross information or awards information or family tree information.

Perhaps instead of calling it "Wildcatt" we could call it cross and award info or something along those lines. THis would be for inqueries such as "does anyone know if Paph ___ x Paph ____ was registered?" etc.

or awards information, such what I quoted Heather in her inquiry about awarded P. wallisii petal lengths. Again, none of it is information to which Wildcatt owns copyrights to.

That's what I was thinking, since it is published information from other sources, and readily available online.

What if we just have an Awarded Plants forum (I can think of a few posts we could move in there also.) And, I want more info on all the awarded wallisii out there.

I don't mind looking up crosses or awards for people. Or critiquing plants, for that matter. If you wanted to set up an area for such a thing I'd participate.

I feel like that old dishwashing liquid commercial... Sunflowers grow well for me. Didn't plant a garden this year though, I have to much catching up to do with the new greenhouse and the rest of my yard.

Which commercial?
Yeah, I was nosing around over the weekend. Ms. Nosey, Matahari, take your pick.

My birds grow sunflowers, but the maintenance people mow them down. In return, I dump all my old media over the balcony, so, they get to mow diatomite also.

The one with Madge... "You're soaking in it"... I can't believe you never saw those.

Two years ago I planted about a half acre of garden. 1/3 sunflowers, 1/3 sweet corn, and 1/3 vine crops. And a few dozen tomatoes and peppers.

Last year I did almost the same thing, but never had time to weed the vine crops. Pumpkins outcompete weeds, by the way, but only if you give them a head start.

This year I'm taking a break... *grin*

Oh sure! Those were on all the time when I was a kid! :D

I'm taking a break this year too - I neglect every other plant I get that isn't a slipper. I bought pansies as a test, they're now dead.
I used to be in charge of our 3 sisters garden at work corn, beans, squash. Round up works better than pumpkins. I was in a rush...no time to weed.
