Gorgeous blooms! I should go and check if my narcissus are blooming yet. It's been so yucky with drizzle that I haven't bothered to go outside in days.

Hey Ross, those are some lovely shots. I know you live in a fairly warm area, but is this early flowering typical or not? Have you had a warm winter, a normal one, or a just a plain weird one?

The one we've had here has been weird: seasonal temps once in a while mixed with far above normal temps. Currently it is 15C (59F) and raining at 2:30AM (I'm up because I'm sick and can't sleep). I'm calling this year the winterless year. No crocus up yet though, but we've got snowdrops, early daffodils, and Japanese plums flowering. That is normal for us, but these high temperatures are not!

Hi Guys,
Sorry about teasing you. I always forget that February is supposed to still be winter. I lived here for 3 years and before that Santa Cruz for 4 years, so I haven't seen a real winter (OR FALL!) in 7 years. We do live above the 45th parallel, but the whole West side of the Cascades typically has very mild winters (Zone 8/9). This year we got alllll the way down to 21F once and had the one snow storm with 3.5 inches. Aside from that, rain and temps in the 30s-40s. This is why Portland drivers can't drive in the snow.

Tom, this is actually very normal and everything is proceeding just as usual. We had a very dry January and I don't know if that will affect anything, but aside from that, the Daffs are 3 inches up, the Sarcococca are in full bloom and the buds on the Almond tree are swelling. The weather doesn't really warm up until April though, so these are just the really early flowers!

Best,
Ross

Very nice, Ross! Out of curiosity, when do the Cyp californicum and fasciculatum start growth? Californicum gets so large it may be pretty early?

Hi Ron,
I don't know the answer to that question. The one californicum seedling I had this past spring started early, maybe late March to early April. By early May, blooms can be seen in the wild. Full Bloom is around Memorial Day and they last until mid/late June.

For fasciculatum, in S OR blooms can bee seen at the end of April or beginning of May, all the way to the end of May for some flowers. In Central WA, blooms can be seen maybe two weeks later. I haven't ever seen this one when it starts to come up, but obviously it's pretty early.

Best,
Ross
