My shopping trip also produced one of these, maybe?
The tag reads (& spells) -Dealesandro (sib)(Echo x Doug Pulley). It is not a hand written tag, cross #Z5495. I don't think I've seen it spelled that way, that's why I ask. Here's the story - I was at Oak Hill Gardens & they had a couple trays of paphs & phrags with the tags indicating they were from MostlyMasdevilla's, Dubuque,Iowa. I commented about the struggling state of the plants in general & was told the guy died & apparently they did not know how to care for them.
Could it be a real D'allesandroi? Maybe someone could shed some light?
Thanks!

Could be. I think the codes that start with Z are from Orchid Zone. Tom Kalina might be able to shead some light on if Orchid Zone had real Dals for sale.

Rose & Kyle

I think Orchid Zone is the only one who has tags start with a Z.
I kind of remember that someone had mention that this plant cross is not true dalesandroii.

I have the same cross. I was told that the plant does not look like true Phrag. D'allesandroi. It looks more like Phrag. Jersey.

I had the same cross from Orchid Magic when it was still in existence.
I believe Orchid Magic got it from Orchid Zone. The plant died before flower so I could not find out for sure.
But I remember the leaves did not look very wide the way kyle describes dalesandroii leaves would look like.

I will be visiting Tom soon, so hopefully I can see an adult plant, although the seedlings Tom has might be all I need to see. It appears that the plants we have are dals x besseae? Do some of the offspring produce the branching flowering habit of dals? .....maybe, it's time to contact Terry Root, again! Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Hi Rose,

We bought six Z-5495's in 2003 - I think they were originally from The Orchid Zone, but we actually got them from Norito Hasegawa. IMHO- none so far have proven to be true d'alessandroi. Wei, I agree that they are probably the natural hybrid of (besseae x d'alessandroi), called Phrag. Jersey.

Kyle: Hope you are surviving the winter -will we see you in Ecuador in May? And how is that article on Phrag. d'alessandroi you were working on? Hope we get to see it soon.

Best Regards,

Kyle

Thanks for the reply guys. Are any of you having trouble with the cultivation end? Someone commented they killed one, this one looked a bit stressed (hence the pricetag of $10) but the roots are decent, I repotted, it's sitting in 1/2" water & it's looking rather perky!

I've also grown those plants marked with the 'Z' tag, and they do look like the hybrid Jersey, which I also believe a great amount of imported besseae are in the first place. I personally have never seen a real Phrag. d'alessandroi and would love to get one if I could actually find one!
