Ladyslipper Grower received some Cypripedium fasciolatum pollen in the spring from a renowned European grower. Cyp fasciolatum is a large Cyp with enormous white flowers that occurs in only a tiny area in China. It is very rare in the US although a number of European growers are producing it. Both Werner Frosch and Paul Christian offered adult plants last fall and Phytesia offered seedlings. We obtained a goodly number of each so hopefully we will have at least one bloom this year.
We pollenated several species and were amazed at the vigor of the flasked hybrid seedlings. Here is a photo of favillianum x fasciolatum seedlings just after being taken out of their flasks. There are about 250 of them. The coin is a quarter. These seedlings grew even faster than Cyp reginae seedlings - these guys were seeds in July! All of the other crosses are also very vigorous growers. Hopefully in 2012 we will have some spectacular flowers to add to this thread!
