Slipperguy January 27th, 2007, 05:13 PM Hi Shelly- Welcome to the forum...nice paphs...no phrags?
greenman January 27th, 2007, 05:36 PM Guy,
Thank you for the welcome. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join. Busy Forum!
Sorry no phrags for me, they're too big for my light garden. However, my significant other has 2 phrags among his 80+ Orchids in his light garden. He is the one who got me into Orchids. He gave me a couple of my paphs.

smartie2000 January 27th, 2007, 05:49 PM :welcome: Thats a nice list of mostly paphs there. Yea you should try a phrag out, they aren't that difficult for most people. You just have to keep them wet.
Paphi January 27th, 2007, 06:55 PM :hi: :welcome:
goldenrose January 27th, 2007, 07:22 PM Welcome Shelley- I'm a newbie, too, joined earlier this month. Not all phrags are big. I know exactly what you mean! Quite often there can be alot of plant/foliage & then smallish flowers in comparison. I have 2 phrags that would be a very doable size for light gardening & they have a nice size flower considering the size of the plant. Olaf Gruss(a besseae X) is one and I got a compot 1 1/2yrs ago of (Boisserianum x Pearcii) x Besseae. One of the plants in the compot was already in bud!
Tried to load photos, it appears my photo size was too big. I'll take some pics of the plants & see if I can't post tomorrow.
Greenpaph January 27th, 2007, 07:36 PM Welcome and great start! We look forward to your photos!
phragfan January 27th, 2007, 09:14 PM "Small" list? Nice list!

Shelley, do you know that there is a show going on in St. Louis right now? It goes through March I believe. I am going today, so I'll let you know how it was.
Nynaeve January 28th, 2007, 08:56 PM Hi Shelley! :welcome:
You don't need any silly phrags...(I promise I'll eat my words and my hat if I ever bloom one)
What you need are some parvis and multiflorals! :poke:

Yeah, I know there is a show going on as well. I can't wait to hear how it was! We are going on February 17 because the Orchid Society is having a show and sale that weekend. We're looking forward to the many purchase opportunities; you can get some VERY nice plants. The Orchids seem to jump into a person's hands in the sale room. :woohoo:

greenman January 30th, 2007, 06:52 PM Teresa,
Can you tell me what parvis and multiflorals tend to stay small? They have to stay small because of space on my light garden. You see, I also grow Gesneriads and the Orchids have to share the space. And since I'm kind of new at Orchids they have to be easy to grow; I don't want to kill them.

I'm not a big fan of parvis and I grow mostly the multiflorals. Unlike their larger cousins, the following are small compact multiflorals and they also don't come cheap:
Paph wilhelminiae
Paph adductum
Paph richardianum

Multiflorals are definitely not small...they are some of the biggest I'm afraid. But parvis are quite compact!

Yes, that is my birthday, so I know I'll be walking away w/ some plants!:D There is also a show in Chicago that weekend. I can't make up my mind on which one to go to...
PhragChic January 30th, 2007, 11:50 PM Just peeking in here to say hello to a fellow forum newbie :D.
That's a nice little list you have there. You are showing a lot of restraint for your first year of growing orchids ;). There's always more out there just waiting to come home with you.
Hmmm...so there's an orchid show this weekend in Chicago apparently. I'm going to have to look that up.
