It's a very basic question I know. But, should I let the old spike wither after the bloom is gone, or trim it? And if so where? I have a little experience growing different orchids,phal.,cat.,onc.,even dendrobs, but Paph. is very new to me. This is one of many simple questions that most basic orchid books don't address. I find them to be geared more towards the care and maint. of the above list. Also, there's a new growth with 3 decent sized leaves. Is now a good time to separate it? There's no blooms so I'm thinking now is the time. P.S. Thanks for the help on Paph. Almaud!

Hi Kenny!

Good question. With most slippers, I do cut the spike after it is finished blooming. Something about the big naked spike bugs me. However, you must be sure that your plant has completely finished. In the cases of sequential paphs and phrags, do not cut the spike until the plant is completely done.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about separating the growths. Do you mean to divide the plant? If it is just a two growth plant, I would recommend waiting until it has several more mature growths before dividing.

Cut or not, whatever looks best to you. Most people cut them off near the base.

Don't separate your growths. A bigger plant will bloom better. The more growths the better.

Personal preference on the spike. I usually let it sit barren for a few days before I snip it, so that it might get some of the nutrients in the spike out of it.

Divide only if necessary I think. None of my plants are really big enough to divide, and I do not run a business.
