View Full Version : Fall/Winter 2006 Member Slipper Collection Photos!
Nynaeve November 18th, 2006, 07:49 AM I think it's about time for us to post NEW photos of our slipper collections. I know mine are pretty outdated! I put the date on this thread so that in the future we can update our photos for different seasons because many people move their collections and change set up when the temps change.
Please post your updated collection photos here. It's always interesting to see different growing areas.
I'll have my photos up later this week...after I have finished moving some of my more delicate plants to their cool weather places! :D

Nynaeve November 20th, 2006, 07:26 PM Finally I finished moving my plants for the winter. Here are the shots of my areas (click on images to enlarge):
This is in the master bathroom. I have a Doritis pulcherrima, butterwort, and Dtps. Lava Glow. They grow here year round and they love it. I think the ugly wallpaper will kill them before I do...

This is my 2 seasons room. It's pretty bare because it's not cold enough for me to move everything in there yet. I have to fit my potted rose, hibiscus, plumeria, and lime trees in there when it gets below freezing.

This is my indoor atrium. I spent about an hour cleaning the hard water stains off the glass today...that is the one drawback to this set up. Daddy installed some overhead racks so that I can hang more plants in here. :D View from the living room (Sorry for the flash glare):

Paphraguy November 20th, 2006, 07:31 PM Very nice and your plants look great! How do you control/handle the cold temps inside your atrium?

I have a thermometer in there and I monitor it pretty closely. It never goes below 45 degrees or gets above 95. :D I think it is pretty well insulated with the very high ceiling and brick walls and windows on 3 sides. The windows probably let in some heat from the house, and the ceiling is very high with a double layer of fiberglass on the top.

Nynaeve November 20th, 2006, 07:42 PM Is that the Grande in the fifth photo? :D
It's a little hard to see in that photo, it's right behind my Sorcerer. Here is a better one, the Grande is in the middle of the bridge:

Nynaeve November 20th, 2006, 07:49 PM I almost forgot my kitchen window (I tried really hard NOT to get any of the wallpaper in the pic):

Paphraguy November 20th, 2006, 08:15 PM Grande has a very nice spot on the bridge, looks very happy!:D
jblanford November 20th, 2006, 09:54 PM The big light is a 800 watt combo 400 MH and a 400 hps. It moves on a 9 foot track. All kinds of orchids grow there. Phrags on the right, and large paphs on the left. At this time Phals and Paphs share the 8 foot flourescents. It is acombo of full spectrum and 65k daylight. The light are on from 7am until 8pm. I water with a spray hose from a near by sink. All the plants are on egg crates with plastic trays under them. This helps keep the humidy up.
Thanks for looking..............Jim

Nynaeve November 20th, 2006, 10:08 PM It looks like you have an enormous basement! Those carts with the lights are very tidy, if I grew under lights that is what I would want.
PS... I hope you don't mind I edited your post a bit to make all the photos show up. ;)
Nynaeve November 20th, 2006, 10:09 PM Ah I see you are also on top of things!
;)
Paphraguy November 20th, 2006, 10:28 PM Jim, excellent setup! Mine is also similar to yours except that I use HPS only. Great looking plants!

Thanks! Let's see your setup too...don't be shy!:D
Slipperguy November 21st, 2006, 12:16 PM No setup just 4 plants:( ...no camera but I do need to get one...someday
phragfan November 21st, 2006, 08:35 PM It's fun to see how many ways there are of growing orchids.
Justin November 27th, 2006, 04:48 PM Great grow shows everyone!
Here is my overcrowded light stand. The plants rest on egg crate over humidity trays. I plan to build a second stand just like this one since I ran out of room so quickly. I also plan to hang some shoplights under the bottom shelf for eventual flasks and compots...
For the second stand I will probably use a 250 w metal halide lamp to give a little more juice to my multis. My current set-up only has 175 w. I think my plants would also appreciate a little red-spectrum from high pressure sodium, but the orange glow would not be very pleasant in my living room. The blue light from the mh lamp actually is actually pretty nice, and my plants grow and bloom well under it. Thanks for looking. Justin

Paphi November 28th, 2006, 09:41 AM very beautiful plans
Tony November 28th, 2006, 03:06 PM This looks like a good place for me to jump in. I started growing orchids 12 years ago, but had to give them up for 6 years while I was in the navy. I just got out about two months ago, and I'm rebuilding my collection. I finished building this setup today, it should be good for a few more months before I have to expand.

Paphraguy November 28th, 2006, 03:19 PM Hi Tony!
Welcome to the Slipper Orchid Forum!:welcome: Your plants look great and they will love the south Florida temps and conditions, perfect environment for your slippers and most orchids! I lived in West Palm Beach for 5 years, I loved it but I just couldn't stand all that heat and humidity.
What slippers do you grow?
grandefan November 28th, 2006, 03:33 PM Super space Tony! Looks like paradise. :D
Justin November 28th, 2006, 08:08 PM very nice space tony! those will be some happy plants and I bet a happy grower too.
J.
Nynaeve November 29th, 2006, 08:29 AM OMG Tony I want your yard!!! Nice plant racks! My father in law attempted to build me some wooden racks but they are not near as aesthetically pleasing as yours. We are going to landscape our backyard in the not too far future and I am going to refer back to your pics for ideas!
What is that on the ground? Is it some sort of rock or is it red mulch? It looks nice!
Welcome to the SOF!
Tony November 29th, 2006, 03:45 PM It was very easy to build, the shelves are wire units from home depot, and the rest is just 4x4 posts and 2x4s for the shelf supports and hanging area. The ground is covered in red mulch.
Justin December 10th, 2006, 07:16 PM Whoo hoo! I just got a new metal halide lamp
with 250 watts. I was running 175w mh before,
but the 250 is much brighter.
It is a very slippery slope
from fluorescents to HID, to bigger HID...
I thnink I've seen a few around here
with 2kw...

Slipperguy December 10th, 2006, 10:53 PM Awesome! ...and your plants look great.
IdahoOrchid December 17th, 2006, 11:55 PM Here is one of my growing areas. It is a reptile enclosure that I no longer am using. It has one 24" dual flourescent fixture. The bottom one is scheduled to have two 24" duals installed. All of my low light plants will be in the top one and the bright light ones below.
It is about equally divided between phals and paphs right now, with a couple of odd other species thrown in. There is one phrag in there as well, a besseae (Bleading Heart x Colossal). 6 or so paphs are missing from the enclosure so I can work on eliminating a small mealie but attack. Just found some on one of my phal seedlings tonight. Acephate to the rescue!!!!
I also have a glass shelved rack in an east facing window and various other windows are utilized as required.
Paphraguy December 18th, 2006, 12:04 AM Hi Steven,
Looks like a nice setup there!
Nynaeve December 18th, 2006, 08:16 AM That's a nice little grow area you have there! Lots of plants in there!
Justin December 18th, 2006, 11:13 AM Excellent grow space Steven! I like the clean design! Looks well-ordered.
Justin.

budsbud April 29th, 2007, 01:49 AM Wow! This is such a fun thread. I enjoyed seeing everyone's growing spaces and plants!
scooby5757 April 29th, 2007, 11:39 AM This has been a work in progress the past couple of weeks. There needs to be a few more places to hang plants going up the walls. Also going to put in some 120watt flourescent bulbs way up top to utilize the top three feet of wall space that is below the HID light line. I figured the phals would go there. Stays at ~70-75% humidity.
