The cross is Paph Rothschildianum ('Charles E' FCC-AOS x 'Borneo' FCC-AOS) Not feeling patient, I bought a 4 growth plant in bud. I'm probably taking a chance posting how it opens and am a little nervous posting it, but who knows. Lets see what happens.:?::?:

Cool, I love roths! Keep us updated on the progress, if you please! Congrats on your new baby!

It should be fun, Heather. I checked out the web site you showed us: the one that shows the buds opening, and their Roth one looked like mine, so I'm feeling encouraged.

I do find myself liking the multiflorals and the Roth surely is one elegant Paph!

Best,
Susan

Excellent choice! It is also one of my favorite multifloral species, King of the Paphs, very well and appropriately called. I have 2 diffferent crosses and one looks ready to spike and your pics are now making me very impatient also.

Hello Dusty Congrats. I just bought the same plant this week also with four growths and in bud like yours. I'd say by the looks from the same vendor. It's my first Roth I don't have a camera so i can't post a pic. but I will be interested in your progress. Good Luck Ray

I think Pete and I saw and commented earlier in the week on your two roths guys (we crawl ebay, but just talk about the plants) ...they looked like nice plants, good score!

Glad they went to good homes! :D

Hi Fred,

Thank you for posting. I bet we did buy from the same vendor! They were listing a few and I started following the listings as I was in impatient mode and wanted something with some growths and ready to bloom. I was apprehensive bidding on it, as it was my most expensive Paph ever. I feel a little guilty about it because my (unsuspecting) husband thinks it is nice. We need not tell him the price. :Shh:

But I was encouraged when the plant arrived as the vendor did such a good job of packing it. It really looked like they cared. I hope yours does well for you. Please keep us posted. It will be interesting to compare the progress of both. Maybe they are sibs.

I'll put up some more pics as the bloom progresses. I'm new and this is my first Roth, so I don't know how fast (or slow) the blooming process takes.

Best,
Susan

Nice Plant. I should be in bloom the next few weeks. How big is your plant...leafspan? It looks very healthy.

Hi There Paphman,

The leaf span is about 20" but the plant is not symmetrical. One side has longer leaves than the other. It even looks like another growth is ready to go into sheath, which would be nice.

One thing I can say is that I have it next to my Paph Temptation Hybrid which is in full bloom right now. The Temptation just towers over the Roth, making me think that the Temptation is a monster and the Roth is a manageable size. I don't know how large fully mature Roths get.

Hi Susan, You will enjoy this plant and it's a good thing you have more growths. I understand that when a Roth starts blooming you can watch it grow in size everyday. So if the bloom looks small to start it will get much bigger. The plants were packaged real carefully. I spoke with the vendor quite a bit and you couldn't ask for a nicer or more concerned person. The price was definetly worth it. You won't have to wait forever for your next mature growth to bloom either another advantage of a multi growth plant.I have a Gloria Naugle in bloom right now that is huge with two blooms but it is a single growth plant and I will have a long wait to see it bloom again but It has been in flower for at least six weeks and still going strong. Again Good luck and enjoy. Ray

Does it take this long for a Roth? This is about 2 weeks later. The spike has grown taller, but but bud is still rather small. When do you know whether it is multifloral? I know that sounds like an oxymoron with a multifloral species, but I don't see multiple buds just yet.

I think so too, Heather. That's OK. I just want to see it bloom!!! I DO love the stripes. My eye is also getting much better and when I see a hybrid or cross with Roth in it, I can usually recognize it.

It sure is pretty! Looks like your plant is only producing 1 flower and not common for first time bloomer. Environmental conditions and culture may also come into play for producing very few flowers on a multilforal Paph. Hopefully, you get more flowers next flowering session! Give it very bright light.

Weeks Tadd??? I wish!! :poke: I appreciate your optomism! I'm thinking months and years, but maybe I'm just getting impatient!

Heather & Pete, I think it will only have one bloom as well. I'm also thinking that the bloom will be small? I will be happy if it gets one bloom & will move it to a space that I have with brighter light!

Thanks!

Hi Susaan, looking good . I am certain we bought our plants from the same person. I too have only one bud showing ,it is almost open probably by the end of the week I wll be able to see the pouch. Just have to enjoy the one bloom for now . I have a few more growths the same size but they are not in bud yet so hopefully I can get them to produce more buds. Ray

Hi Ray,

I was hoping you would find this post as I was wondering how you were doing with your Roth. It DOES sound like we bought our Roths from the same vendor.

Did it take yours this long to open?

Please keep us posted as to how yours is doing!!!

fred
June 5th, 2005, 08:39 PM
Yes it is a little slow going My BUd is about the same size as yours. I'm sure they will get much larger as they mature but I really doubt that there will be any more flowers on this blooming. I am surprised to only get one flower on a Roth. but I had another plant with Roth in it that looked like I was only going to get one flower and it was in full bloom awhile when it surprised me and the spike started growing again and put out three more buds. that was a total surprise maybe we will both be surprised with these. There is always the possiblity that these were tagged wrong although those look like stripes from a Roth. I will keep you posted. Ray

Susan, do post a pic or 2 or few when the bud opens, I would love to see the outcome and roth flowers are large and I have seen some that were almost a foot across, especially the most FCC awarded Paph roth clone Rex FCC/AOS x Mont Millais FCC/AOS.

Hi Pete,

I'll definitely keep you posted as it progresses. I might start it as a new topic, however, so you don't have to scroll down to the end of Page 3 to see updated photos.

Does this make sense? Or does it make more sense to keep the same topic going with updates? Can't make a decision!

Tadd, I thought you were kidding when you said that this would be opening in weeks. I thought it would take MONTHS. Sorry!! You were right!! :therethere: When you see the photos, you can tell that the bud is opening.

I have no clue as to what I will get. I guess this Roth will only put out one flower. I will take photos as it progresses and keep you posted.

Hi Susan, My single Roth Flower opened up yesterday and the widest part measures 7 inchesThat is from side to side. I believe it will grow a bit more. Your flower isn't far behind mine . Ray

Hi Ray, It's hard to imagine that you can get a 7 inch flower out of this tiny bud. My bud only measures 1.5 inches!! Is this really possible???

Thanks!

Hi Susan, As the flower grows to open it will get much larger but not like it would be on a more mature plantMine is seven inches but the side petals are thin not big still it's a nice flower. I am working on trying to get a picture on here. Can you send me an email then I could reply and add my picture. I'm two new to this picture thing but I'll learn . Ray

Here it is today. It's almost fully open, but the dorsal still needs to come up. (I think.) It is about 7" wide. I did not pull the petals to really measure it. The petals are quite narrow. I DO really like the very crisp stripes on the dorsal and the rich burgundy coloring on the pouch.

http://pic17.picturetrail.com:80/VOL796/117745/2501289/100486526.jpg

I wonder whether the flower will get bigger or if this is it???

Paphgirl
June 13th, 2005, 05:52 PM
Susan, if you look inside the pouch, is the color more magenta? I notice in a lot of these plants that the color burgundy, or mahogany tends to be the magenta inside showhing through the green outside, causing it to appear more burgundy or w/ a more brownish tinge. I find that very cool.

Paphraguy
June 13th, 2005, 05:58 PM
Very nice solid stripes on the dorsal, I like that! I have seen poor quality roths with very bad striping, broken stripes and whatnot.

I'm in Maine, but to get "here," you have to go from "there" and "turn left where the old church used to be."

Old Maine jokes. We have lots of direction jokes. None of them will ever get you to where you want to go. (And after the "tourists" leave, we laugh at them) Crusty old bunch living here!!.

Roth will be fine. It's "a young thing and cannot leave it's Mother."
