I like the lip. Interesting species.

So, I have two plants, Hawkinsara Keepsake and Haiku Dawn that were unifoliate, but now are putting out bifoliate leaves. One with a sheath (:D) Is this just a matter of maturity for these two?

Its hard to see in the lower photo, but the first few growths of this plant were single leaves. The first flowering growth was bifoliate.

I don't have allot of Cats, and I got most of them (hybrids) for my wife. But schilleriana is a pretty nice species so I picked up this one for myself. I mounted it on a walnut bark slab, and it sends out lots of roots.

I'm not a Catt person but I like this species, looks very different than the usual frilly ones that I don't like.

Definitely more of a realistic look than a floofy catt. I know it is a specie! I like the color contrast on this! Good growing!

It smells really nice too. Floral with bubble gum. Once its established I bet you can't kill it. The leaves are stiffer than shoe leather.

Interesting to me how the species catts and phals are so much more appealing to me. Just more natural looking - Although I also prefer species slippers, I don't feel the same at all about them. The hybrids are still appealing. I guess I'm just a slipper girl at heart!

Looks nice Rick, I have a few catts. I noticed some of your leaves are a little darker, is that normal? I ask because a lot of mine have almost a reddish tint to some of the leaves.

I think its due to high light (also see culture sheet from Orchids Limited for this species). This plant is in the brightes part of my greenhouse. Probably gets over 4000 fc at some point in the day.

I've always had a soft spot for cattleya species... Of course I have a few (well, a lot, actually) of the standard pinks and whites, and an inordinate amount of mini/compact hybrids. But the species are my favorite. I like the 'imperfections' of a species, round and flat can get out of control. I'm particularly fond of bifoliates, especially the spotty ones.

For what it is worth, I have far too many (dozens...) of the following catt species:

schilleriana
leopoldii (guttata v. leopoldii, to some) "Mendenhall"
harrisoniae
walkeriana

I probably have at least one too many of several others... Amethystoglossa comes to mind.

Contact me directly if you want a good deal on some of those. Haven't gotten around to listing them on the website yet.

Pet peave alert!

<peave> Species... not specie. really. Species is both plural and singular. Like deer, or moose. You can have one species, or a hundred species. Specie is a fancy term that refers to currency. </peave>

:poke: Can't count the number of times I've heard accredited AOS judges do the same thing. It really does drive me nuts... Especially when 'experts' do it.

Oh goodie!!! :joy:
While we are on the topic...

<peeve> Species *aren't* capitalized. Just hybrids. </peeve>

What is really amusing about this is, it *was* Peter's peave, and when he corrected me, just exactly one year ago, I thought he was being super arrogant. Now, it drives me literallly up a wall when someone capitalizes a species.

That is why I do not correct people anymore. And isn't it peeve and not "peave"?

I was really ignorant back then. I have told you many, many times how glad I am in retrospect that you told me. I remember a few spelling lessons back then also, haynaldianum, boy did I have trouble w/ that one at first!

I hate it when people correct my spelling... (just kidding)

I do wonder who first kept pe(a|e)ves as pets though. And just what was so annoying about them.

I go out of town for two days, and when I come back I find a thread on spelling etiquete (spelled wrong probably) all over my schilleriana pictures.

I guess we need to start a pet peeve thread, huh?

Sorry Rick!

Hey, I didn't start it... *grin* OK, maybe I did, but I couldn't help myself.
