View Full Version : Paph. lowii problem
Paphgirl March 5th, 2005, 02:06 PM Does this look like sunburn? I went away for the month of February and returned to several obviously burnt plants. All are pretty large, mutli growth paphs and included dianthum, and this lowii, which sit right next to my tigrinum where the temps are getting up to 95° on a sunny day. I'm getting sun here from about 9-4 daily. They are all in 5.5-6" pots and get watered once a week, generally, small fans run 24/7. A couple of the very small older leaves of the lowii had this last week, and I pulled them off, hoping it was normal die off, but now this week, the new growth has them also. They aren't wet or mushy, so I don't think it is rot.
Is it what I think it is? This plant just getting too warm? Thanks very much for any help/input!

Paphraguy March 6th, 2005, 09:35 AM If you think it is getting too much direct light, then just move it to a very bright shade and keep an eye on it.
Paphgirl March 6th, 2005, 03:46 PM Thank you Peter, as you know, the plant's been moved back, a bit. Of course other things had to move into its' place, so we'll see how it goes. Today of course is cloudy so I couldn't watch the sun too much. :| I took out my middle dayspot also, and moved fans so they are directed over the plants that are getting the most light and heat.
If anyone has thoughts on this NOT being sunburn though, please let me know!
SteveT March 8th, 2005, 08:29 PM This just looks like some minor sunburn. I wouldn't worry unless it spreads.
Paphgirl March 8th, 2005, 08:31 PM Thank you! If it spreads, I'll let you know.
Paphgirl March 26th, 2005, 02:01 PM Finally got a better photograph of this problem. It hasn't really worsened, but I wonder if the new growth will continue growing. Any thoughts? I also checked the roots/repotted today, and looks good in that department.

Paphraguy March 26th, 2005, 02:14 PM First, the roots on that plant is just amazingly healthy and the second, it looks like rot on that new growth which doesn't look good. Any bad odor coming from it? Does it feel wet?

Well, that's why I keep checking....
No, no odor, and it is not wet. Just wrinkley and some of the area is white, some brown.

Then it could just be sunburn after all. Keep a close eye on it.
RickL March 26th, 2005, 10:36 PM The roots look great Heather. The bad spots don't look like they are to the base or crown of that growth. Besides watching it , I don't think some cinamen would hurt.
Paphgirl March 27th, 2005, 07:10 AM Thanks Rick, yes, it has been well cinnamon'ed. You are right, the base is actually fine, though I had my thumb over it. Just the midsection so I'll keep watching.
Paphraguy April 17th, 2005, 12:42 AM How is the plant doing now? Please keep us posted.

:jawdrop: Oh really? EXCELLENT!!! Congrats and you should really go out celebrate! Mine looks like it's about to sheath also. Send some good luck my way, will you?
Paphgirl May 7th, 2005, 10:00 AM (That's a funny moti!)
Yes, sure does look that way. :D All three growths I thought last week had new leaves, but now, one of the "leaves" looks much more sheath-like, and not at all like the other two new leaves, with a tinge of color around the rim, and hairy. I must have stared at the three of them for 15 minutes to be sure.
RickL May 7th, 2005, 10:15 AM Lowii is a very prolific plant. Mine has flowers on a second spike about to open, while the first spike is starting to loose the older flowers. Hopefully I'll get some overlapp of the two spikes to get a picture.
Bozo May 8th, 2005, 03:50 PM I'd keep a close eye on that stuff. looks like sunburn but I had a lowii hybrid that had some type of rot that looked just like that, a light brown in color, without the typical bacterial smell or oozing, which eventually consumed the plant. if that stuff starts to spread, i'd just yank off the new growth.
