View Full Version : Some of my stuff
Ernie May 20th, 2005, 01:23 PM Well, I'm the new guy and I figured this might be a decent way to intro myself since Heather abducted me :poke:
My Phrags are:
Phrag "Uranus" 4N aka P. lindleyanum x P. grande
Phrag "After-Glo" 4N aka P. Eric Young 'Mont millais' 4N x P. Sorc App 'Fantastic' 4N
Phrag "Iron Works" 4N aka P. Sorc Apprentice 4N x P. longifolium 4N
Phrag "Appalachian Sunset" 3N aka P. Eric Young 'Mont millais' FCC/RHS 4N x P. carcinum 'Aileen' AM/AOS
My Paphs are
Paph "Quasar" aka P. roth 'Eureka' AM/AOS x P. Macabre 'Dr. Death'
Paph "Julius" aka P. roth x P. lowii
Paph "Berenice" aka P. philippinense x P. lowii
Paph "Macabre" aka P. 'Voodoo Magic' x P. sukhakulii
Paph roebellenii
Paph rothschildianum
Paph fairrieanum aka P. 'Candor Rhapsody' x P. 'Catatonk'
Paph hyb "Macabre" x "Shadow Magic" x "Red Maude"
and my latest disappointing addition...
Paph "Puppentanz" primary of P. haynaldianium x P. kolopakingii
I still have some research to do on a few of them. I've got a sampling of a few other species/hybrids and over 40 in all but these are my babies and I mother hen them all the time.

Paphraguy May 20th, 2005, 01:29 PM :welcome: to the forum, Ernie!
You have a nice Paph collection. :clap2:
Ernie May 20th, 2005, 01:36 PM Omigosh, a Mainiac slipper grower? I would seriously hate to have your electric bill! :poke:
Paphraguy May 20th, 2005, 01:40 PM I grow indoors, not in a greenhouse so it is actually not that bad. :joy: We have quite a few New Englanders here on the forum.
Paphgirl May 20th, 2005, 02:28 PM Hi there!
Nice collection but why was your Puppentanz a disappointment? Just curious!
Ernie May 20th, 2005, 03:50 PM Because it's primary cross between haynaldianum and kolopakingii that turned out totally freaking green with purple stripes and spots. I really don't like green. Sure, it's got great form and reasonable culture with 4 buds on two spikes, but GREEEENNNN!!!! C'mon, I bought yellow and magenta and it's Green????? :embarass:
I mean really  if you offer something for sale and someone like me buys it, shouldn't we at least be forewarned it's a crapshoot for coloration so we don't spend 70ish bucks on the darn thing based on a "perfect" photo?
Maybe I'm way off base here and yah, it's not listed as clone or anything but I seriously don't think you can mix those two species as primaries and wind up with the product I have. It's sort of like mixing a chocolate doberman with a black n tan, you ain't getting a chihuahua normally unless momma seriously fooled around.
TADD May 20th, 2005, 03:53 PM Howdy Ernie, nice to see some more southern representation here! Damn yankees!!! :poke: What type of lights do you grow under?
Ernie May 20th, 2005, 04:12 PM Four, 40 watt gro-lights close doing about 2.5k fc and 4 distant supplemented by a south sun window on the paphs and phrags, the rest are outside in a southeast view getting some serious morning sun. Well, they're Catts and Dends and Phals so they can handle it.
RickL May 20th, 2005, 04:55 PM Well it might be green but ought to get HUGE and make lots of flowers. Welcome to the forum Ernie
I always wondered about the electric bill of the Northerners too.
Paphgirl May 20th, 2005, 05:42 PM Well, the pics I turned up look more green than yellow to me, which makes sense as kolo is probably more dominant? I don't know. It's a neat hybrid, I think. Great spots.. I'm sure you always try to sell it.
I love green, actually, my fav. color!
Rick, my electric bill isn't bad (well, it wasn't last winter, but I just got new lights so it might be worse soon. My gas bill is a bit of a nightmare though. We have gas heat here.
RickL May 20th, 2005, 06:05 PM Gas / Electric it's all the same. I have to add in the cost of propane for my heater in the greenhouse.
I always thought I would try to derive a unit energy cost (or energy requirement) for maintaining tropical organisms in temperate climates.
Whether it is tropical fish, PD frogs, live coral, or orchids. They all seem to want to use up a bunch of kwatts or btus.
wolfcreekmn May 20th, 2005, 08:01 PM Hi Ernie, Welcome ! You have a nice list of slippers.
Ernie May 21st, 2005, 12:41 AM I must be insane...after my tirade about hating green I just saw a Phrag ecuadorense division I fell in love with. There really is NO justice in this world and our addiction rules us!!! Trust me though, I'll happily suffer through it when the next Phrag or Paph spikes.
If I can ever figure out how to post pics here, I'll happily share my bloomers with you guys.
Paphraguy May 21st, 2005, 08:21 AM Ernie,
Go to the Galleries and just follow Heather's tutorial on how to post photos. Hope to see pics of your plants!
Ernie May 21st, 2005, 08:43 PM Thank you kind sir, but where the heck is the "galleries" link?
Paphgirl May 21st, 2005, 09:11 PM Thank you kind sir, but where the heck is the "galleries" link?
Just scroll down the main page and you'll see three photo galleries - one for Paphs, Phrags, and Cyps. Choose which is applicable and also check out the tutorials, then you should be all set, but do let me/us know and we can help you out, if you need more assistance.
Good luck!!
Ernie June 4th, 2005, 01:45 AM *sigh* The bug bit me again last week and I'm proud to announce the delivery of a few new "babies."
Phrag Giganteum (P. Grande x P. caudatum 'Windy Hill' CCM/AOS)
Phrag equadorense
Phrag Mem Dick Clements "Rocket Flash" 4N x P. Jason Fisher 'Red Flare' 4N
Phrag Unnamed (Phrag Barbara LeAnn x P. longifolium)
Phrag Don Wimber 'Waunakee' 4N (P. Eric Young x P. Besseae) x P. Grande 'Vista' 4N (P. longifolium x P. caudatum)
Phrag Twilight 'Rising Rocket' 4N x P. Grande 'Vista' 4N
Phrag Elizabeth Castle 4N (P. Mem. Dick Clements 4N x P. Hanna Popow 4N
As you can probably tell, I have a definite fondness for Phrag culture and the reds as well as the drama of waiting to see what unbloomed crosses turn out to be. That Clements x Popow looks especially interesting.
Looking at the list above and seeing 'unnamed', leaves me with a question for the gurus out there. Wouldn't the 'Rocket Flash' x 'Red Flare' and 'Waunakee' x 'Vista' also qualify for unnamed yet status by the same standard?
Just for "gee whiz," since the Paphs got jealous of the new arrivals, I've got a pending order for three more Paphs from Sam Tsui. Hmm, no  it still won't be equal, perhaps I have to look for a few more...umm  hopelessly addicted I guess.
TADD June 4th, 2005, 06:45 AM Wow! Ernie great haul! I got some scale the other day on a phal does that count?
Paphraguy June 4th, 2005, 08:07 AM Good choice!
lienluu June 4th, 2005, 08:14 AM Wouldn't the 'Rocket Flash' x 'Red Flare' and 'Waunakee' x 'Vista' also qualify for unnamed yet status by the same standard
You're right, the Phrag Don Wimber x P. Grande and the Dick Clemens x Jason Fischer are unnamed crosses. Actually, the Twilght x Grande is also unnamed. (According to the latest wildcatt update)
Remember though, the cross is Dom Wimber x Grande, not Waunakee x Vista. Waunakee and Vista are just clonal names of registered hybrids, not registered hybrid names...
Lien
Ernie June 4th, 2005, 11:02 AM No Tadd :( The scale are just dinner guests that are free-loading. I've got some snails that think they're family and do the same thing. :poke: Must be my wife's side of the family though.
Thanks Lienluu. Is there some magical place on-line that explains the specifics of both 'how-to' and allows registering names?
Greenpaph June 5th, 2005, 09:50 PM Hi Ernie!
Welcome to the forum. I look forward to your photo postings. However as you can see by my username; I like green!
