View Full Version : Cyp Pubescens Seedlings
Tom Velardi September 12th, 2006, 05:57 AM Well, here are the only Cyp seedlings I grew this year, C. parviflorum v. pubescens. This was their first year in "soil". Actually, I used a completely soiless and inert mix consisting of kanuma (a soft pumice-like material), sand, and very small charcoal (actually the carbonized shells of rice hulls!). I fertilized using a hydroponics fertilizer at a very dilute rate, but with weekly applications, and lots of flushing with pure water between. They were planted in a clay pot and grown semihydro using conductive tape wicking water up from a reservoir. The plants were started early in mid April and went dormant in late August. I just put them in the fridge today.
Here's all of them, four strong little plants:

And one to show their size. Those are centimeters you're seeing, not inches!

Well, that was the first season out of flask. Next season will tell the tale for these guys. I hope I can get at least one to flowering.

Paphi September 12th, 2006, 11:06 AM so nice plants
joakim September 13th, 2006, 06:48 AM Tom
You cant expect them to flower next year can you????
That would be very good growing, but they seem to be to small for that.
They look good and with hard work You might get them all in flowering size after a few years. The work is harder for You since the climat is not the best for Cyps.
I am keeping an eye on Your sucess on "growing Cyps in warmer climate" and wil try later in Portugal with a bigger plant.
First I will make sure I will be able to have similar conditions as You regarding temperatures.
Good growing
Joakim

Joakim,
I didn't mean next year, I meant in a few years. Cyp seedlings out of flask really aren't that difficult to grow the first season. The following seasons are difficult and many won't make it to flowering size if conditions are less than what they need. I'll be lucky to see one flower after another two seasons of growth, so three years from now at earliest!

Mang September 13th, 2006, 12:25 PM They sure look healthy and will definitely bloom under your care!
Curious - what happens to the noodles like roots after they get the cold treatment?
Thanks

Hey Mang,
If they are handled correctly in dormancy the roots should look exactly the same come spring. Cyps don't handle root damage well, so I have to avoid that!

Mang September 14th, 2006, 11:56 PM Thanks for the info Tom.
