Hi all, well my orchid order arrived this morning. Boy was I shocked when I not only held the box but opened the box....

The two Paph's that I ordered were ever so tiny. The Paph niveum I knew about as they told me it was very small, yep that indeed it is. The Paph Hamana Spice I was told was a BS size but it is nothing more than a division from a plant. I bought a Paph from a member at our meeting last night for $8.00 and it is even bigger than this new one.

Now it gets even better, the two Masdevallias are BS too, well what they don't know is that on the back of these tags in the pots they put the date the division was and both these Masd. were divided Jan of this year.... These are not BS sized plants either for a nice price of $26.00 each

Now the Aerangis biloba I must say is very cute all mounted on its "tiny" piece of wood but there again tiny oh my god yes, and yep another $26.00 for that one too. So what I have learned with this is that they indeed do not sell or ship you plants ready to bloom but send you divisions and seedlings.

The only way I would order again is if I wanted another Aerangis or Angraecum orchid as they are very hard to get here. I am quite disappointed but hopefully these orchids will bloom in no time for me.

Hm, I've had only two experiences like that - what I've learned - if it is inexpensive, it generally won't (if it is something others have for sale for more $) be what you hope for. Even if it is expensive and awarded, from certain vendors it may even be a smaller than hoped for division - with mealies.

Suffice it to say, there are now three vendors I will never order from again.

The vast majority of them though, particularly ones that receive good feedback, I will order from over and over again. There are really a very few Paph. vendors that I have found to be truly spectacular in their breeding, cost and size of plants.

Sorry to hear about the miscommunication on their part. Candian or State-side vendor?

You do get what you pay for, most of the time. Cheap paphs are almost always a bad deal, unless you can see them in person. On the masdevallias, I wouldn't be too concerned that they were divided in January. Masdevallias are weeds. They fall apart when you repot them. You don't need more than three or four growths to have a 'mature' plant, although they can, of course, get many more growths.

This is a reputable Canadian place and after talking with our club President what I got is what I should have. He says that we are very spoiled in what we pay for orchids most of the time.

My Masdevllias he says are considered BS size and should bloom in the year. The two Paphs are seedlings and will take longer and that I knew when I ordered them. The Aerangis was a bit of a shock but there again it is healthy and I know will do okay. The plants are all very clean and healthy I was just shocked at the size. I have never ordered before so this was a shock when it should not have been.

We can get some really good deals here for Phals mainly, our Walmart and Home Depot you can get a beautiful blooming Phal for 20.00

So all will be fine, I miss judged and will keep you all informed on the growth of them......
