View Full Version : Encyclia from the West Indes - unk to me
J W Tucker May 17th, 2005, 07:01 PM Here is an Encyclia I took a photo of on my recent vacation. Thought someone might know what it is. It grew very dry and in almost full sun.

lienluu May 17th, 2005, 07:03 PM Really nice! Were there many orchids in bloom when you were there? What island were you at? I was in Anguilla last weekend but did not have any time to explore.
Paphgirl May 17th, 2005, 07:17 PM That's a cool flower, neato lip! I like the photo too - you are very talented w/ the camera!
Not a clue what it is though, sorry!
J W Tucker May 17th, 2005, 08:18 PM I was on Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock and the only coral atoll in the Carribean, the name of which I cannot reveal. All three are fabulous in their own way. And yes, only 5 different orchids, but literally 10's of thousands in bloom. It was spectacular! Unfortunately I did not have a polarizing lens and the in situ picts of the tetramicras are really not good enough to post.
Any guesses on the third island? Or the id of the Encyclia?
Park Bear May 18th, 2005, 07:48 AM nice pic, i have no guess on the island, the only island I am familiar with is Cuba and that is because of my like of their fish and cigars.
lienluu May 18th, 2005, 07:50 AM is Cuba and that is because of my like of their fish and cigars.
A good friend of mine in New York has a huge population of Cubanichthys cubensis and Cubanichthys pengelleyi. Really neat fish. He says the C. cubensis are much more difficult to raise though then the C. pengelleyi.
Park Bear May 18th, 2005, 08:49 AM that is true, pengelleyi are not that difficult. What is your friend's name? He might be a member of the organization that I belong to, the American killifish Association? I know many of the members from New York.

Yes, both he and I are AKA members. I mainly raise Cyprinodons and SAAs, though I do have some cold water Aphyosemions such as A. jorgenscheeli and A. ocellatum. He also belongs to some local clubs, I believe, like LIKA. He's been trying to convince me to go to the AKA Convention next week (I think it's next week).
Seems like there are quite a few Killikeepers who also keep orchids.

Jon in SW Ohio May 18th, 2005, 04:27 PM We do have a lot of Killi people who like slippers(or slipper people who like killis). I am trying to go slow so that I don't go overboard as I am known to do. One pair of Nothobranchius rachovi should do it until I try to collect every species and form of Notho.
Park Bear, I am planning on tagging along with you to the convention still...e-mail me if you would when you are wanting to depart. Hope a lot of the killi people here make it to the convention...I would like to put a person to the screen names.

The AKA convention is NOT a good place for that! The last time I went to an AKA Convention, I said i would not get any new fish and ended up bringing 10 pairs home!

I can only handle one obsession at a time, I'm afraid. :poke:
Jon in SW Ohio May 18th, 2005, 06:20 PM Actually there are three coral atolls in the Caribbean....Turneffe Atoll, Lighthouse Atoll, and Glover's Atoll.
As for the Encyclia...more likely Psychilis truncata or a close relative.
Jon
J W Tucker May 18th, 2005, 07:13 PM I stand corrected on the number of coral atolls but three is also not correct as I was on another well to the north and east of those mentioned.
I was given the following link and believe this to be the correct ID of the plant in question.

Paphgirl May 18th, 2005, 07:39 PM Great! Glad you found an answer!

Yes Lien, you should come, the convention is great as you know. I am the AKA A/V chairman, I video, repro and sell all of the convention speakers for the AKA.
