Epiphyllum oxypettalum

Just noticed that it is currently in bud for the first time. A friend gave me a cutting about 1 year ago. I will have to keep an eye on this one very closely!

Ooooooo! I love these! So totally cool! Are you going to have an all night cactus party watching it open? :woohoo:

Lucky you! Years and years ago, neighbors across the street always invited people over on "the night" the blossoms were going to open. It was magical, and I spent years trying to flower my own but without the knowledge and experience to succeed.

Don't leave town, and be sure and get pictures.

And more...

“Surely you can’t be cerious!”

“Of course I’m being cerious, and stop calling me Sherly!”

I know, I’m cruzin’ for a brusin’

Oh yes, the plant: looking good Peter!

Oh Peter, it's breathtaking! I bet the fragrance is awesome. How big are those blooms? Can you put something in the picture for scale?

Extremely fragrant! The whole greenhouse smells like perfume! It is 8.5 inches (22.5 cm) across.

10pm photo - It appears to be fully open

10:30PM The ruler is about 6 inches away from the flower, but you get the idea. I apologize, but it is almost impossible to hold the ruler, focus and shoot in the dark!

4am photo! Finally faded!

Someone told me that it closes within 3 hours! LOL! BOOOOO! TRY 8 HOURS!

It was worth it! I have one flower on the same side and two flowers on the other side yet to go! We won't party over these though!

thanks for bearing with me and enjoy!

What's this "thanks for bearing with me" bit? The night-blooming cereus is the stuff of dreams and legends - magical and mystical beyond 'most anything but the Ghost Orchid, in my opinion.

Thank you for the delightful treat, for propping your eyes open and taking the breath-taking pictures.

Very nice series of photos Peter. I remember as a kid in my grandmother's neighborhood in St. Petersburg, FL they used to have night blooming cereus parties, no kidding. The neighborhood would get out card tables and flood lamps and have a party right next to a tree full of the cactus. I liked it because I got to stay up late!
