Here is another blooming Cypripedium in the garden of Paul Perakos. It is an Asian hybrid of which the name was lost in transport. Note the extremely tiny size of the flowers - that is a white plastic knife next to it. The tiny flowers are of the size and shape of the real Cypripedium calceolus - a European and Asian species that is different from the US Cyp parviflorum, which used to be lumped with it. C calceolus is a tiny plant with a tiny flower: bright yellow slipper with dark mahogany petals that grows in alkaline soil in full sun, in contrast to the US species which grows in neutral or usually acidic soil and will not tolerate full sun. The reddish color probably comes from a Cyp. macranthos parent, but that is only a speculation. A confounding factor is the double flower on a single stem - neither calceolus nor macranthos has those with any frequency whereas Cyp henryi commonly has them and is also very small. However, henryi has a greenish-yellow flower (see other post in this gallery).

Paul sent this photo to Holger Perner the world's authority on Asian Cypripediums. Holger recognized it immediately as a hybrid of Cyp calceolus from Manchuria (he noted the various regional distinguishing characteristics, none with which I was familiar!) and Cyp shanxiense. Holger said that in parts of Manchuria these two species grow together and bloom at the same time, so natural hybrids are common. He said that the slippers in the hybrids range from rust-colored to bright red. Interesting that Paul and I in looking at the flowers last weekend wondered if he pollenates and raises a large number of offspring, might not some of them bear red flowers? The experiment has started....

I am happy that some people like this plant. I find it rather attractive but others who have seen it (including its owner) find it ugly! It was not used in propagation attempts this year. I plan to try to talk him into at least selfing it next season.

Beuty is in the eye of the beholder :)
If the spots (dirt if You do not like them :( :)) are red rather than brown it would be even more cool. Maybe something to strive for?
A selfing would aslo be nice with a big variation in colours I presume
