While I was observing the mere sprinkle that lasted all day outside my office, apparently a major rainstorm parked itself closer to home and dumped about four inches of rain in a very short time. I came home to find the higher part of my garden scoured clean and washed into the lawn, onto the patio, and out to the street. Plants held on but the mulch is pretty much gone. My Cypripedium "collection" is at the bottom of a bank that now has a bunch of gullies in it. Fortunately I still had chicken wire cages around the Cyps to protect them from the squirrels. Because of this they're now on little plateaus between the gouged out sections. I've got no way to regrade to fix this problem (twice in eighteen years) and the neighbor's behind us, up the hill have a lot so bare it might as well be a parking lot. *sigh* Could be time to move to the country and take the Cyps somewhere safe!

Sorry to hear that! I too have that problem with my yard everytime there is a downpour and the mulch gets washed away to the driveway down at the bottom of the hill. Glad your Cyps were safe!

I know it's a pain, but have you considered pot culture? I suppose if this problem hits only once in 18 years, you might have better odds in the ground with the occasional flood than in a fast drying pot. Still...

4 inches is a lot of rain! I'm glad the Cyps survived.
I vote for a move to the country.

UPDATE: I found out this morning it was actually 7 inches of rain. No wonder, eh? Lots of rugs on the deck and driveway this morning. Does anyone know if Febreze works and how?

Yes Febreeze does work and I use it all the time since I have so many indoor animals. I even heard it works great and recommended to get rid of skunk smell!

Mark,

I'm glad to hear those wonderful specimen Cyps you've got are OK. Seven inches of rain is pretty unusual, so I'd keep them in the ground. Cyps are far happier out in the garden than in pots. The only species I've heard of that is washed out like that in the wild is C. kentuckiense since it can be found on floodplains that get seasonal inundation. Sure up those slopes and mulch - you don't want to loose any of those babies!

Ross,

Welcome to the forum. You'll find the discussion on the Cyp side kinda slow, but take a look around and enjoy the rest as well.

Tom, do you mean that there are plants other than Cyps that people want to discuss?! What do they look like?!!

Best,
Ross

The Cyp discussions were going very strong this Spring, when they were in bloom. Maybe it will pick up this Fall when everyone tells about their new purchases...

Yes, welcome to you both, montanum and cypfanatic.

sigh* Could be time to move to the country and take the Cyps somewhere safe!

That was quite a washout! There is a lot of ex-farm space here in northern CT for Cyps :-)
