What are your thoughts on purchasing a kovachii species or hybrid? Comments please!

I'd purchase a well established species seedling. However, knowing me, that'd be risky.

I guess I can not really vote on the survey, because I already bought both the species & hybrids. I have to say that the hybrids are three time to twice as vigorous when compare to the species. I list them in order of growth w/ the reply to Stephen on the other thread.

I did not believe that the flasks are this risky,I am so spoiled w/ the strong besseae hybrid flasks. (I forget that they are the result of line breeding since the discovered of the besseae) I see otherwise now.
On the other hand Stephen seems to be quite succesful with his Pk. So it could be my inability to keep them alive than to blame the plants.

I'll most probably get a kovachii species seedling as soon as possible whenever they are available or maybe wait until the larger more mature established plants are available next year but I can hardly wait to get my hands on one. I just don't have the patience.

I have very little space as of now so I may get species or hybrid when prices fall and I find a new place with more room for my plants.

Well I guess I should have made a reply for those who already have kovachii...DUH! That's what I get for doing a late night poll after a glass of wine.

Comments are as always appreciated even if you already have kovachii! I guess that would qualify as getting one as soon as possible! :D

So, Teresa are you getting a kovachii seedling or hybrid? and when? :D

In that case, Teresa, I will still probably get the species & hybrid seedlings as soon as possible. May be a little bit more toward the hybrid.
I can see why most of the voters prefer the species.
Although the sizes are amazing, according to Jerry Fischer, nearly 10 inches for the largest one (even the clone Goliath, is only 7-1/2") I really love the smaller but w/ better form & gorgeous color Roseline & Tupac Amaru, and the hybrid of Tupac Amaru x Dalessandroii.
The votes really show that the SOF members are quite a bunch of passionate peoples. So far, the highest votes are still get the pk species & hybrids as soon as possible (no one votes for more information yet)
This really makes me feel a little bit better about my decision.

I will probably get one of each! I'm thinking kovachii x St. Ouen or Cape Sunset. And I definitely want to try a species. I'm not sure when I can afford it, but I definitely want an established seedling of each!

I spoke too soon. I just saw that the number of voters who would like more information moving up.

Teresa,
How about getting the cross kovachii x Walter Schomburg

I saw a Walters Schomburg, maybe 2 years ago at a show, It was awarded, Extremely beautiful, better than a lot of besseae hybrids, better than Don Wimber, Noirmont etc.. I would say it look like a best giant Jason Fischer.
I think that it is very likely that this clone is the one being used to make the cross, unless Glen has better ones.

Anyone interested in a species or hybrid seedling should look for the Piping Rock advertisement in the August issue of Orchids!

I wasn't going to buy kovachii for 5 years til I saw them for sale at NYIOS and couldn't resist getting a half-flask (bargain priced at $225)...

I think cool and bright, constant moisture but not sitting in water, and lots of oyster shell/ limestone chips/ dolomitic lime is the key for kovachii.

I have not seen one of these. I would love to see how all of these hybrids bloom out before I really decide. I may totally change my mind! What I would really like to see is what a primary cross like kovachii x schlimii or fscherii looks like. :D

Glen Decker has those, plus a few others. I have a kovachii x St. Ouen, which is doing fine -- so far.

We need a smiley with it's fingers crossed for good luck...

holey carp Stephen... how many plants were in that flask?

Those 1/2 flasks supposely contain between 12 to 15 seedlings each. If I remember correctly of the number cited on the kovachii legal ownership certificate. However it really has more in it. I actually counted at least more than 5 extra protocorms. That group have the other 5 legal mother plants. They are working on the process of exporting to Europe, Asia etc. But I have not heard anything other than the availability in the USA & Canada.
Both Stephen & I got that size flask in GNYOS show. Unfortunately, at the time I did not know about the temperature requirement, consequencely, I lost all , and have only 4 left from that flask, and they are still trying very hard to recover now.
you could see the result number of seedlings on Stephen post on the kovachii report threat. He did such an excelent job of cultivate them.

Right now I've got 7 which are doing very well and about another 10, of which I expect 6 or 7 to reach maturity. If I had a way to replate some of the smaller seedlings that were present at the time of deflasking, I probably could have gotten a few more.

Glen at Piping Rock is the man to ask about getting the CJdM kovachii anywhere that isn't Canada. He travels a lot, although I can't say if he ever goes to Oz.

We recently had the Australian Orchid conference here and Peruflora (Manolo Arias) was present... by the looks of it, there were quite a number of flasks bought so hopefully some of those plants (including mine -fingers crossed) will grow to flower...

I can't vote either because I already have a specie, ableit small ones and one hybrid and you don't have those choices for me.
