View Full Version : Paph Matrix
GaryB December 8th, 2010, 08:10 PM Can you get any rounder than this Paph Matrix (S. Gratrix x Conco-bellatulum)? It's a first bloom plant, the stem supports the flower (but leans forward so it has a little help to show it nicely) and has heavy substance. One other Matrix has been awarded; this one is a little smaller but I think the shape is great.
Measurements:
NS 6.0 NSV 5.6
PW 4.0
DSW 4.5
I'd like to hear what you think of the flower.

dragonfly22 December 8th, 2010, 11:52 PM Beautiful flower! Very well done job!
Bolero December 9th, 2010, 05:19 AM Flower is very nice but doesn't look quite open. If it is open then it's a little cuppy for judging but I would love to have it. Great potential but not yet award quality (in my view).

I'm not sure how long it's been open. I'll post a picture from the side after it's been open a few more days.
orchidlover December 9th, 2010, 08:37 AM Gorgeous flower but I have to agree with Bolero that the flower looks like it is not fully opened yet. Nice color though.
phragmip December 9th, 2010, 12:55 PM I like it very much it is beautiful!
casey December 9th, 2010, 04:48 PM Has the flower opened up more? I was assuming it had by now.

GaryB December 14th, 2010, 11:15 PM Here are some new pictures. I don't think it has changed much. It is a first bloom plant, so I'm hopeful that the next bloom will be even better

Yes, me too! I just like how it looks.
GaryB December 16th, 2010, 09:48 AM Educate me. From a judging perspective, what are the good/bad points of the flower?
casey December 16th, 2010, 10:03 AM I'm not a judge but since you asked I would like it if it looked a little more flatter. Flower has nice form and color to it. This is only my opinion.
Slipperguy December 17th, 2010, 11:53 PM I don't care what the judges think of it but I love it...
orchidlover December 19th, 2010, 11:27 AM I think to be show quality, most judges look for the flat look, form and color and the over all top quality appearance.
fairorchids January 5th, 2011, 05:57 PM Educate me. From a judging perspective, what are the good/bad points of the flower?
1. It is slightly too 'cupped' (not flat enough), and one of the petals curves slighly backwards at the tip, so it is not symmetrical.
2. It would have to be compared in size against any awarded flowers of the same grex.
Having said that, I would love to have it and I would use it for breeding.

Thanks for the comments. I've saved the pollen, but haven't put it on anything yet.
It is a little on the small side, but it's also a first bloom. So, we'll see how it improves on the next one.
Bolero January 7th, 2011, 11:33 PM Very nice!
