cowbite June 26th, 2006, 07:02 PM The mystery plant looks a lot like a cactus a neighbor had many years ago. We stayed up all night to see it bloom. Apparently, it blooms for one night only? I don't really remember... I was about 7 at the time.
Greenpaph June 26th, 2006, 07:40 PM Teresa and Zach,
It is called a night blooming Cereus (Epiphyllum oxypetalum). It blooms in the middle of the night and lasts about 1 hours and dies. If the plant is big enough it can bloom often. I have one that is not big enough yet. Very fragrant as well. A friend had one and gave me a piece. I went to visit his greenhouse at 1AM to watch the flower open and close!
Paphraguy June 26th, 2006, 07:40 PM Wow, I love those Japanese Maples, they are gorgeous and they can be very pricey especially the good quality ones and they can go for thousands of dollars for the rare ones. The staghorn fern is also beautiful and looks huge. That strange plant does look like the plant character from Little Shop of Horrors. :D
Nynaeve June 26th, 2006, 08:28 PM WOW thanks for the name of that strange cactus! This particular plant was growing way up the ceiling of the greenhouse and was wrapped around the side even further than in the picture. It had maybe 100 buds on it, it is enormous! I wondered why the buds were always closed and if they ever opened any more. It's a little sad when you think about this plant in the greenhouse and no one around to enjoy the open blossoms. I know a lady that works there through my orchid society...I'm going to ask her how I can get a division! then I can throw midnight cactus blooming parties!
Slipperguy June 26th, 2006, 08:30 PM Amazing plants...thnx
James June 26th, 2006, 08:44 PM That Cactus makes "Dragon Fruit" they are really good.
Paphraguy June 26th, 2006, 09:05 PM Hi Teresa,
If you want to order smaller (or even larger or any size) harder to find Japanese Maples, check out Japanese Maples (http://www.japanesemaples.com/). I ordered my cutleaf Japanese Maple 'Inaba Shidare' from him a few years ago. It is really very beautiful with fine red leaves that turn a bright bright red in the fall and it is doing great. Great prices and excellent service!:poke:
Did you know there are fanatic Japanese Maple collectors out there just like us slipper fanatics?
phragfan June 26th, 2006, 09:18 PM Very impressive. If that were close to me, I'd probably be there every day!

Are you referring to this one?

I wondered if it was a Dragon Fruit! My husband showed me pictures of HUGE ones in Vietnam. They do sell pieces of Dragon Fruit cactus, but they are expensive and I haven't been brave enough to try growing it yet! This one had no pot. It was growing out of the wooden steps!
Mang June 27th, 2006, 11:48 AM ....right out of Little Shop of Horrors! LOL
Mom has this plant and yes it is very fragrant! Have a picture of the flower somewhere, will try to locate it!
Thanks again Teresa!
