WOW! What a nice garden you have! I love the bleeding hearts. I might have to copy you and get some. How do you grow them?

Also I know they have Japanese maples at the greenhouse here, are they difficult to establish? Are they water hogs?

I wish I could grow hosta. It's lovely!

Hi Teresa,

The Bleeding Hearts are very easy to grow, just make sure you plant them in a shaded area where they can be shaded from the hot afternoon sun and the same goes for Japanese Maples, especially the delicate cutleafed ones. I have seen Japanese Maples both broad leafed and cutleafed ones at the Houston, TX Walmart and Home Depot a few years ago. My cutleaf Maple 'Inaba Shidare' is a beautiful clone and I had ordered it online a few years ago. Japanese Maples are very slow growing trees and yes I like to keep them well watered on hot sunny summer days. Most of my garden plants are left ignored and they grow just fine. I guess hot Texas would be a different situation. Do you have any Japanese Maples or are you planning to plant one?

Oh and Hostas are also very easy to grow here in Maine and if you get them, plant them in shaded area where they are protected from the hot afternoon summer sun. Some Hosta flowers are even fragrant. I even have a couple that are variegated and they are just beautiful.

I will definitely look for bleeding hearts. I saw Japanese maples at the huge greenhouse here that I frequent. They were so pretty, and this particular greenhouse usually doesn't sell things that you can't easily grow here. They did have the cutleaf version and another type also. I was thinking about getting one, since Daddy killed my lime tree. OK I admit I helped. Do the Japanese maples stay small or are they going to grow into huge trees? I assume they are winter freeze hardy (lime trees are not...).

I don't think I could grow hostas here. It doesn't get cold enough. Don't they need to get really cold to thrive? The heat here in mid-late Summer is just relentless. In August even my rosebushes get sunburned. Sometimes it is really dry too. We are already on stage one drought restrictions for lack of rain to fill the aquifer. That means I can only water my lawn once a week, which who cares because my grass is dead anyway!

I remember seeing lots of Hostas in Houston Texas, so you would have no problem growing them if you can grow them in the shade. Japanese Maples stay small particularly the cutleafed ones. Some grow up to be small trees and they don't get as big the oak trees. The cutleafed ones are very very slow growing and I like their "weeping" growth habit and their beautiful delicate red (some have green leaves that turn bright red in the fall) leaves. All Japanese Maples turn colors in the fall and they are just gorgeous when they change.

You must have a lovely garden, Pete.

Interesting, Teresa lives in a warm (hot) climate and is envious over the plants that do well here, up North. I live in the North, and lust after the plants that need zone 8 or higher to grow. Aren't we all nuts???

Nice garden pics, Peter! I think this time of year is one of the best for us northernish gardeners.

I love the bleeding hearts too. They finished blooming here two months ago! That's a nice lilac you've got there as well.
