After dropping my my car off at the shop 3 days ago, I took advantage of an
actual sunny day and walked home. Along the side of a relatively busy road, I noticed this clump of cyp acaule. I was able to return to the site and take photos today, but the blooms are starting to go by. Still, I thought it was a rather impressive clump of cyps.

Hey Teresa,

Check out this SITE (http://www.orchids.org/ooc/na_orchids/us_orchids_java.shtml) According to them 2 species of Cyps are native to Texas.

Hmmmm...VERY interesting. It says Kentuckiense is native in East Texas, but it highlights the entire state. Same with Parviflorum that says it is native east of Texas but highlights the whole state. I wonder if any of these have been spotted in the Big Thicket? I must investigate further...

I grew up with this species and it is still one of my favorites in spite of all the really cool Chinese ones now available. Really, within the Cyp world this species stands out as extraordinary - a cut above many others. Too bad it is so finicky in cultivation. Seeing one in flower in the wild is pure magic.
