View Full Version : Phrag ecuadorense in bloom again
Paphraguy May 9th, 2005, 02:33 PM This plant finally finished blooming on a 2 year old spike and another spike is now in bloom. :-dance: This time, the flower is slightly larger than the ones produced before.

Paphgirl May 9th, 2005, 03:26 PM Simply elegant!
Park Bear May 10th, 2005, 07:50 AM love it
Paphraguy May 20th, 2005, 03:20 PM Here is another updated pic with 2 flowers. It was windy today, so the pic didn't come out so good. Thanks for looking!

Paphgirl May 20th, 2005, 03:32 PM Looks good to me, Peter!
TADD May 20th, 2005, 03:49 PM Yeah all your photos are just so horrible. It must be nice to have a "bad" one that blows my "best" one out of the water. Very Nice!! :poke:
wolfcreekmn May 20th, 2005, 07:51 PM Looks good Peter. How long was the 2 year old spike ? The plant stays pretty small on this one right.
Paphraguy May 20th, 2005, 07:55 PM Thank you all for the kind comments!
Eric, the 2 year old spike was around 2.5' tall and yes the plant stays small but grows into clumps quickly. I think the flowers are slightly larger this time.
Paphgirl May 20th, 2005, 08:52 PM I don't seem to have the best luck with these types. I don't know why. My caricinum and ecuadorense both had trouble establishng the divisions I got - I wonder why that is!
Park Bear May 21st, 2005, 09:49 AM I had a chance to get a large specimen at our last meeting, but someone beat me to it
RickL May 21st, 2005, 11:40 AM These guys can be veritable weeds. I have a handfull of pearcei seedlings I need to sort out and sell the balance for cheap. These guys like tons of water. I leave the pots in standing "swamp" water, complete with algae and mosquitoes
Lots of light, and I grow big cushions of live moss in the pots.
Paphgirl May 21st, 2005, 11:51 AM Hmmm, I may try the sitting in water thing for a while with my ecua. I have the feeling I am not keeping it moist enough, and it is in a smaller pot.
Paphraguy May 21st, 2005, 11:57 AM Yes, I also water mine more frequently especially during summer.
RickL May 21st, 2005, 09:06 PM Unlike the long petaled phrags that are found in trees or on cliff faces, the sedge like phrags are often found in bogs or next to streams. The roots are often in the water table all the time for these species.
Paphgirl May 21st, 2005, 09:18 PM Thanks Rick and Pete (my first little ecua from Pete didn't make it - My fault completely!!) - my ecua is now sitting in some water - may as well give it a try! Something I'm doing it does not like!
Paphraguy May 21st, 2005, 09:23 PM Actually, ecaudorense is never underwater at all times, only during rainy seasons when rivers and streams swell. When submerged, clean water runs through their roots, never in stagnant stale water.

So what do folks suggest? I don't think that my culture is correct at the moment.
However, the plant did come w/ mealies and a small root system. Not happy about that as an awarded division.
RickL May 22nd, 2005, 09:55 AM Well during the rainy season could mean submerged roots for months on end.
Most people with these phrags use the standing water trick, but change it frequently so it doesn't get swampy like mine does.
I think these would be a great candidate to try with semi or even full hydroponic
Paphgirl May 22nd, 2005, 10:07 AM I also wonder if it would be a good candidate for straight diatomite.
Park Bear May 23rd, 2005, 08:12 AM I am trying to get one of these from a local grower and I will be using s/h as a growing media. I will be the guinea pig.

Yes, you should get one and let us know how s/h works out for you! :) Try and find onebetter established with multiple growths.
Park Bear May 24th, 2005, 09:48 AM That is the plan Peter, I would like to get a larger plant. The one I missed at the meeting was a very nice plant. I haven't been able to get a hold of the person yet. I've left messages but no return phone call.
