Here is the heebie jeebie surprise I found this morning while watering my caladiums. I noticed a few flower spikes growing so I was leaning over to snip them off and this ugly booger was staring up at me! I about jumped out of my skirt, but was brave enough to snap a picture. Mr. Cycada seemed totally unfazed by my copious watering or photography. I usually see the skins of these attached to things, but rarely do I see a live one. It's a big one too, 2-3 inches:

It must be the hubby. lol

Those things are gross. I remember when I was in elementary school I used to go around grab as many as I can put them in a paper cup with an m-80. Wrap up the paper cup with masking tape then BOOM. And me and a buddy used to pick at them with a bb gun when we saw some crawling on trees. lol

Curious - what did you do with it?

Nothing! I left it there. Do you want me to send it to you for fishing bait? ;)

These guys really do look like aliens, but then again I'm sure they have the same feeling about us! In Japan they loved because they are a symbol of the summer season and all that it brings: HEAT HEAT HEAT! Parents buy their kids nets to go out and collect them. Each July and August you see kids running everywhere with nets and clutching plastic collecting boxes. Little boys love to run up to me and show me their prizes. One day one little guy eagerly showed me a plastic bag full of cicadas, and I said, "Oishii so, ne!" (they look delicious, don't they!) He gave me the strangest look possible while his sister broke out laughing and screamed "Tabenai! Tabenai!" (you can't eat it! you can't eat it!). Ahh, living in Japan can be fun!
