View Full Version : Cyp henryi (and hello)
kevthescot May 5th, 2005, 06:44 AM Hi there,
Firstly let me introduce myself. I'm Kevin. I live in London, UK and I was directed here by King when I posted an image (below) on another forum.
Here is the only Cyp I have at the moment. I'm looking to get some more, but I'm just playing wth this one to see how I go for a couple of years. Hopefully I'll have a nice big clump very soon.

Paphgirl May 5th, 2005, 07:00 AM What a cool looking Cyp, Kev! I haven't seen that one before. I am just getting more interested in them since the start of this forum.
Welcome, btw, glad to have you here!
Paphraguy May 5th, 2005, 08:03 AM Welcome to the slipper forum and thanks for sharing pics of such a beautiful Cyp!
wolfcreekmn May 5th, 2005, 08:34 PM Hi Keven, very nice. I have never seen a all green Cyp. . How big is the flower? Thanks for posting the picture.
kevthescot May 6th, 2005, 04:23 AM Hi there,
Glad that you like it! I'll have to take another photo of it now since the petals are now reflex and the lip has opened up a biit more.....
The flower is about 3.5cm across from (petal tip to petal tip). To be honest I thought that it might be a bit bigger, but hey.... size isn't important....... right????? :poke:
Regards, Kevin
Park Bear May 6th, 2005, 08:17 AM welcome, plant looks nice. How tall is it? If the flower is 3.5cm, my guess is it is between 10 to 11cm.
fundulopanchax May 8th, 2005, 08:52 PM a very nice plant and one of the few "fragrant" Cypripedium flowers. Does it have the intense henryi odor yet?

Paphgirl May 8th, 2005, 09:06 PM oooohhh, it is fragrant? there are fragrant ones?
what is the scent?
kevthescot May 9th, 2005, 09:47 AM To be honest I've not checked! I didn't think that it would be somehow...... Do you know if it's fragrant during any specific time period?
I'll go home and have a sniff tonight!
Regards, Kevin
fundulopanchax May 9th, 2005, 04:55 PM Cyp henryi's scent is usually described as "honey" or "spicy honey" - I guess I would call it spicy honey as it is "sharper" than honey and quite pronounced in flowers during their first few days. After that the scent is not as strong and not pleasant. I have not been able to describe it but a colleague who also has them describes the scent of older flowers as "wet dead dog."

kevthescot May 10th, 2005, 04:25 AM Ron,
I did smell it this morning just before I headed to work............and although the flower has been open for about a week now it smells faintly. I don't know how to describe it. I don't have a wet dead dog to hand so I can't say it's exactly like that, but it is a sharp acidic smell from what I can make out. :(
Not exactly the nicest smell there is, but I'm still enjoying the flower.
Regards, KEvin
