I just got a Phal. Gigantea it's my first. Two leaves are 17 inches long and it's in spike. Phals. were what I mostly grew before the slippers I have about 175 of themI always wanted to try a Gigantea but didn't want to wait for a small one to grow so when I found this one for sale I grabbed it. Should be fun watching it get even larger. Ray

That is an awsome phal Fred. A friend of mine in the society has three of them. The leaves are like big droopy pizzas. They bloom well for him, but they can be touchy about getting moved around allot.

Thats what I understand I have to pot it up as it is bare root I am thinking of using a basket but I never potteed up a basket before I'm guessing you have to secure the plant to the basket first like if you were mounting I;m not sure have to do some research quick I don't want theplant just sitting out with moss wrapped on it's roots. Thanks Ray

I agree Ray. Its a pretty big plant and may not be stable for a while without tying it up. I think basket w/moss is the way to go to if you have the humidity. If you have belina or violaceae you should know what to do already. I have my belina mounted on a piece of elm bark. It took to it pretty good, but it definitely prefers it hot and muggy.

Well I have my belina potted in a plastic pot and in the last few months it's growing like gangbusters, really just putout a leaf at 13inches and ispushing another witha new spike also. but I am going to go with a basket. Ray

I think another advantage of the basket for the giganteae will be that you won't need to disturb it for repotting. Once it outgrows the basket, just stick it in a bigger basket.

My bellina does grow awfully sideways! Is it advisable to basket it and hang it? That would actually work well for me, now that I have this new rack.

Belina has a neat growth habit that realy shows off nice when they are mounted. They like to grow down the mount, which looks cool with those alternating round leaves.

If you keep it in a pot, then I'd tip the pot and hang it.
