Also blooming in the backyard ...way down in the far corner !!!
There is probably no group of plants that evokes more emotion and curiosity as the amorphophallus or voodoo lilies. This primarily Asian genus loosely translated indicates that the flower resembles a sexual part of the human anatomy...you guess which one. You are likely to remember the "stink" that was raised last summer when A. titanium flowered at Kew Gardens in England. Every news magazine, newspaper, and news television show featured the grand event. No plant has ever received such press...except maybe Cannabis sativae. :D

. The giant hand shaped leaf to 3' across is held atop a mottled fleshy stem that arises from a giant tuber (5-10 lbs). When the bulb gets large, it flowers a couple of months before the leaf emerges with a bizarre 6' tall stalk of purple fleshy vinyl sitting atop a 3' wide vinyl cup. While the odor is the stuff great stories are made of, the smell of rotting flesh is quite evident for at least one day during the bloom .

They are Arums, or Aroids as a whole as this is the common name of the Araceae family. Of course this term covers a large group of plants from Philodendrons to Jack in the Pulpits. Arum seems to be a common name for any ariod that doesn't have a more common name like our native Arrow Arum.

I am guessing this is Amorphophallus konjac, as Voodoo Lily is used on a lot of plants like my Sauromatum guttatum.

I love Amorphophallus, and DEFINITELY need to collect more...geez I collect too much.

Cool, Gilda! I actually wouldn't mind if mine never bloomed. The leaves are cool enough. What's not cool is that I managed to store all the other Amorphophallus and Arisaemas last fall but forgot my A. konjacs in the ground. I guess we'll find out now if they're hardy here. :D

I can't remember exactly...over 5 years...this is the first BIG bloom. It stays in the ground here year round...there were some flies around it today, but I detected no bad smell !
