I use a CHC based media as suggested by Antec.

You might check through the old postings in this section, since we've gone through this topic before a couple of times.

You might get some ideas and answers faster, and then we could also proof this site for archived info retrieval ability.

Welcome Aboard

I just tried the search function for old postings and it worked pretty good.

I grow all of my slippers, and most of the rest of my collection, in PrimeAgra in Semi-Hydro culture.

I was just up in the Rochester area over the weekend, and spent much of the day with Joe Kunische (Bloomfield Orchids). Joe started playing with S/H culture about 6 - 7 months ago, and is having spectacular results.

The one thing he had noted (that I had not looked for) was that once a plant is moved to S/H from bark mixes, it tends to grow much fatter roots. He speculates that fatter roots = more surface area = more ability to take up nutrition and grow. He will have a few plants in Erie this weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go home with a few ribbons.

S/H for me also. I usually will repot all of my newly purchased plants in s/h once they need repotting. It make sit easier for me and I don't have to worry about over/under watering my plants.

seems to me that the "real" surface area has more to do with the root hairs than in the actual diameter of the roots. of course if the root hair density is the same, a "fatter" root will have more SA. not that anyone is inclined to count the number of root hairs on paph roots.
