View Full Version : Hail Damage
Nynaeve May 5th, 2006, 10:11 AM Last night we had one of those freakish Texas storms that comes in out of nowhere. I swear, it must be so easy to be a weatherman in Texas...half the time they predict rain and nothing happens or vice versa, so when something actually does happen everyone is caught by surprise! Around 10:30pm I was woken up by a serious womping of marble sized hail. My first thought...oh no! My outside plants! I don't have too many orchids out in the open, but I do have some. Here are some pictures of the damage, you can see the marble sized bruise marks. In case anyone wants to know what plant-hail damage looks like:
A couple of catts:

And my poor plumeria was just starting to really leaf out

Paphgirl May 5th, 2006, 10:29 AM Oh Teresa! That's too bad. Thank goodness more weren't harmed!
Paphraguy May 5th, 2006, 10:36 AM Sorry to hear that.
Park Bear May 5th, 2006, 11:06 AM soryy to see all that damage
Nynaeve May 5th, 2006, 11:20 AM Thanks yall. There were about 6 catts out there, a couple of dens, a vanilla, and the plumeria that were damaged, but I think it is mainly cosmetic and will not really hurt the plants. My roses took a pelting, but seem to be ok, my narcissus are all bent over, and my ranunculus are flattened. At least they had already bloomed. I'm very happy that my more delicate plants and my plants in bud are under cover of the patio.
Nynaeve May 5th, 2006, 01:20 PM Some pics of the hail if anyone is interested:

Mycorrhizae May 5th, 2006, 05:00 PM That's amazing! I've only ever heard about, but never seen hail that size - and often thought people were exaggerating! But - your poor orchids! I suspect people are far more likely where you live to keep their cars under cover.
TADD May 5th, 2006, 05:02 PM Sorry to hear T! We haven't had a good hail storm in awhile... Now that I said that.... Look for me tomorrow at the Wachovia PGA tourney... I will be wearing shorts and a T-shirt, picking up trash....

Yeah it was pretty bad this time. Joes Crab Shack's roof blew off with the high winds, along with alot of other wind damage and naturally, stupid people trying to drive through flooded areas and getting stranded. I'm just glad I wasn't out driving in that hail. Last time I was out driving and a hailstorm hit, there was $3000 damage to my car. It looked like someone took a bat to it.
TADD: if the hail doesn't get you, the golf balls might...heads up!
Greenpaph May 5th, 2006, 11:28 PM Thank God that a number of orchids were protected!
Sorry about the others!
Jon in SW Ohio May 6th, 2006, 03:32 AM You're lucky, the last time we had hail like that it was promptly followed by a tornado that didn't touch down(but took the shingles off our roof and downed a lot of trees). Your plants should recover fine, especially the plumeria, they grow pretty quick and the damage is mostly cosmetic.
I am glad things weren't worse, and hopefully they all recover quickly.
Jon
Mang May 6th, 2006, 05:12 AM Sorry to hear about the damage. Hope your plants recover fast. We do get hail storms here too!
phragfan May 6th, 2006, 09:21 AM Yes, sorry about the damage. Hail can be very nasty. Hope all recovers soon.
