View Full Version : Go Slippers! Go Slippers! RAH! RAH! RAH!
Paphgirl May 3rd, 2005, 05:23 PM Just got my May issue of Orchids Magazine and the Winter FCC awards are photographed and listed. There are some GREAT slippers, three gorgeous roths (I actually like the one most that got the fewest points.) The three roths are 'Red Glory' from Orchid Inn (the one I like!) 'Frank Smith' of Krull-Smith, and 'Perfection' which actually was cut spike that was sent from Tokyo to the NYIOS.
For you Gloria Naugle fans, ( :Yuck: ) one from John Naugle got the first FCC for this grex. The other awardees are:
St. Swithin 'Alford' (great!)
James Bacon 'Tejas'
Macabre 'Dark Dominion'
Lady Isabel 'Nancy's Choice' (great!)
Shin Yi's Pride 'Red October'
Moustache 'Atticus'
Jerry Spence 'Candor Redwing' (great!)
Winwine 'Dark Spell'
Scott Ware 'Crystelle' (REALLY dark!)
Phrag. Don Wimber 'Martha Helbling Adams'
Sorel Point 'Crystelle'
Jason Fischer 'Gus'
Interestingly the slippers get more FCC awards than any other genus. This year, we took (haha, listen to me!) 50% of the FCC's! 16 slippers out of 32 (and this is the trend over the years, it seems, an average of 48% for the last five years!) Their figures are only through March, so didn't even include the NYIOS roth!
Go Slippers! You ROCK! 8)
Paphraguy May 3rd, 2005, 05:41 PM Just amazing, isn't it?
Paphgirl May 3rd, 2005, 05:44 PM Just amazing, isn't it?
Mm, I'm so proud of our slippers, isn't that strange?
I'll send the photos to you tomorrow, Peter.
RickL May 3rd, 2005, 05:52 PM I thought it was cool that two of the FCC's went to growers in my Orchid Society. One was Alan B.'s Cat (LC Pumpkin), the other was Ken Avant's James Bacon.
Jon in SW Ohio May 3rd, 2005, 07:32 PM I'm still a little surprised that Gloria Naugle got an FCC. It is a good one, but did not look any better than the AM ones I have seen in person(like my AM one :poke: )
Oh well, read the above as pure jealousy...I wanted the first FCC, but it is fitting that John Naugle got the first one, so I don't feel as envious.
It is good to see the slippers taking the majority of the awards...shame our local judges here don't like paphs, and really don't like phrags(especially green species...but that's another story/rant altogether)
Again, read the above as jealousy/envy!

fred May 3rd, 2005, 07:56 PM I have to agree about the Gloria Naugle I have one in bloom now that looks bigger and better the leafs are more defined My first bloom to open is huge and the second one is just opening this week but I don't believe it will be as big as the first still it's great to have two blooms opened at once. Wish I could post a picture but I still don't have a camera. spend all my money on orchids. Ray

What is it with people not liking the greenish Phrags?
Same thing is discussed in the Phrag. issue of OD.
Anyway, I have to say, I am biased because I really just don't like that hybrid. Sometimes I think species are best left alone and not messed with. At any rate, I like it enought to know what I think looks good and I agree, it didn't look like the best I have ever seen.
I really "liked" the one that Glen Decker had at the Mass OS show in the fall, I think it was better than this one. But, that is just my humble opinion.
malipoense May 4th, 2005, 01:24 AM any possibility to post pictures here Heather ? For those far away who cannot get the magazine ? :?:

Paphraguy May 4th, 2005, 07:17 PM Thanks for the pics. I also like roth Perfection the best!

Pete, you still want a hard copy? (You have another reason to say yes, mind you!)
I also now like Perfection the most, though initially, I thought the first one had the nicer dorsal. Oh heck, I'd take any of 'em!
Oh, and what about that Lady Isabel? Why did I think there was a stonei parent? Has anyone crossed stonei w/ roth? (the should!) I suppose I have to go now and find out. For some reason I thought this was stonei x roth....sigh...)
Paphraguy May 4th, 2005, 07:29 PM I actually like Pefection and red Glory. Red Glory has very symetrical petals and I like that. Frank Smith has droopy looking petals which I don't like but that is just my personal preference. Yes, send me a hrad copy as long as you don't mind. I'll have something to read, thanks! :D What other reason?

Yes, P. Lady Isabel is P. rothschildianum x P. stonei, registered in 1897 by Statter.

(oh, you know....where did I go this a.m.? Hint=lunch)
:D
Oh, and yeah! Can you say MISPRINT!?
Woohoo! Woohoo! I was right! I was right!
Lady Is *IS* stonei x roth! Hahhahaha!! roth x St. Swithin my a$$ Oooeee! I have learned so much in a year! Totally enamoured w/ myself! http://clicksmilies.com/s0105/liebe/love-smiley-030.gif
EDIT: It appears I initially read the wrong description from the photo, and when I checked the magazine, well, I realized my mistake. There was no misprint, I am just a cocky newbie, trying to show off my abilities to identify hybrids w/out checking. However, at least I am girl enough to admit it and not edit it out. Sigh...
Paphraguy May 4th, 2005, 07:38 PM Oh, ok yes now I remember, thanks I love the spicy pistas! :-dance: Lady Isabel is another primary hyb that I really like but don't have one yet, maybe when I have more room before I get one.
Bozo May 4th, 2005, 11:50 PM I had a chance to see that cut spike of 'Perfection' in person. the depth of color on the flowers was astounding, even for that 'rex' x 'mont millais' outcross. the petals in particular were more dark mahogany than yellow. and the usual outstanding form. tokyo orchids must have gotten a few more awards in that bunch, because if i recall they really had some hot paphs on display.
malipoense May 5th, 2005, 01:00 PM thanks so much for the pics ! :)
